Why does he eat his poo ? Hello I am really wondering why something so cute and sweet can do something so yucky !! LOL I have a 6 month yorkie named Adam and two minni dauchounds and the problem is when I put Adam out in our fenced in doggy yard he runs for the nearest poop pile and digs in like he is sooo hungry. I clean it up but where my dogs are all so litte its hard to find it out there in the yard, Adam eats Eukenuba puppy food soft mixed with dry for breakfast and supper and has dry food to pick at in between if he wants. He seems way more interested in poopie than good food. Anyone had this discusting problem ? Thanks so much Sincerely Kim  |
I know its disgusting but I think a lot of dogs do this. My shepherd did a few times and i was so grossed out(yuck) but I know some of my friends dogs have also done this. Just watch out for those doggie kisses after that lil treat lol. |
My dog was doing this too and then he just stopped. I was relieved!!! He always wants to lick your face! Gross!! |
My Rudy is 15 months old and still does it every once in a while. Check a pet store there is something you can put in there food that makes it taste bad and they won't eat it............Cindy |
I heard from somewhere that when your dog starts eating poo, it means that they are just really bored in general. I don't know if this is true or not .. :T |
One of my friends had a pet supply magazine type of thing, and I saw this product that you can put in their food to make their poop taste bad (which sounds really funny because doesn't poop already taste bad!!?). Maybe you could look for that and try it. It's like a sauce type of thing. |
From what I understand the mothers eat their young's "waste" to keep it from preditors, that part I can understand but what I don't get is why the young, when they get older eat, it too, even males. I don't think it is healthy for them to do this because there is no telling what they are recycling and what kind of germs and such is in it, especially if they eat another dog's waste. |
You can also spray bitterapple on it. I tried this and it worked. |
Try DETER Mason is now 8 months old but when he was about 3 months, he used to eat his poop. I was utterly disgusted, and I knew I had to prevent this behavior. There are tablets called "Deter" - they come in a blue box and are inexpensive. I fed it to Mason for a couple of weeks and he stopped. I also repeated "NO" everytime I caught him eating his poop. When you scold him though, be careful because for a while, Mason thought I was scolding him for pooping, and he started to run away from me as soon as he pooped :( SO I had to make sure to praise him when he pooped, and scold him ONLY when he ate it. Good luck! |
Eating Pooh! This was a problem for me! Not only is it disgusting among other things, I was told by my Vet. that it is due to lack of minerals in his diet? I tried everything, it's a common problem. The more upset I got, the more excited he got, thus the more he did it! Beleive it or not, he stopped eating it, when I ignored the Behaviour? No amount of scolding or products would make him stop, I tried everything from the Pet Stores to the Vet. prescribing medication. He was too smart he just stopped eating it during the medication and started eating it again after the medication was finished! We even used to tag team each other (me and my Husband) we had to watch when he was going pooh and then the other would have to distract him and steal it/pick it up, before he could eat it. It was a major problem and bothered/disturbed me deeply! And one day he just stopped and got bored with the whole game? Or maybe he just grew out of it? If it makes you feel better? He not only ate his, but cat pooh too! As well as duck/geese pooh. It was a Delicacy for him? |
There are several products on the market that you just put in their food and it is supposed to deter coprophagia. Deter is actually the name of one; Forbid is another. I personallty recommend Accent-it is NOT a tenderizer but a flavor enhancer!.. Just put about 1/4 tsp in the daily portion of food. It has worked for me when I have only a few dogs. But, when puppies are being weaned and mom still cleans them up. the other dogs can start doing it again. I am not sure about the reasons but I do believe that lacking something in their food s=is a cause because if it were, they would have gotten the nutrients the FIRST time thru and not need to recycle the poo. I've never really understood why dogs eat crap!:) My parents have a springer spaniel, and when "Daisy" was about 5 or 6, my mom saw her eat cat poop! Which is strange age to do this for a somewhat, adult dog . She would go into the litter box (there wasn't a cover on it) and eat the poop, it was so disgusting. Finally, when my mom noticed she was doing this, she moved the litter box out of the laudry room, and into a storage area in the house and put a baby gate up, so only the cats could get in the room, to do their business. We have no idea if she eats poop out in the backyard, but, I don't think it would surprise me. I'm going to be picking up my new puppy Coco, within the next two weeks, and I hope she doesn't start this. |
