Cant believe this recall!!! I received this email alert: **"You may have heard by now, but here's the news in case you haven't. Petco, along with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, is recalling pet food bowls. The stainless steel bowls are contaminated with low levels of a radioactive material. The bowls are 9.25 inches in diameter, 3.75 cup capacity, with the SKU number 1047493. Someone knowledgeable on the subject wrote that the steel contains, according to Petco, ”small quantities” of Cobalt 60, a potentially dangerous radioactive material which produces gamma ray radiation. Given the amount of time dogs spend at their food and water bowls, it's probably not immediately life threatening, but they should be returned. If you do return them, put them in the trunk or as far away from you as possible. Definitely keep them away from small children. Gamma radiation will penetrate most house walls, so there really is no safe place for them. Distance is the key, as the radiation falls off very quickly as the distance from them increases. The half-life of Cobalt 60 is about five years, so you really can't wait it out.**" |
Usa made bowls? I try to buy Usa thinking it's safer. So if they are It doesn't sit well with me. |
Foreign supplier. Seems they have more problems. I buy Usa or from any good country that doesn't use slave labor whenever I can Pet Supplies - Pet Products - Pet Food | Petco.com |
 Nice. I stopped using dog food bowls. Just think they are mostly poor quality. |
OMG how scary for the furbabies and for pet owners too!!! I think I may use paper plates:eek: |

Yes very upsetting. I use paper plates (I know, it's kinda wasteful). Teddy is the only one with a bowl, and he needs to keep it because he gets his food stuck in his hair (I home cook). I use a glass water bowl made in USA |
Gosh makes me want to start using paper plates too! uggggh! |
Great idea on the glass water bowl too! |
I use ceramic bowls..hopefully thos are safe...geez what isn't being recalled? |
I have been using stainless steel bowls for years I think I got them at Petsmart. I wonder if these would be bad too. I think I will switch them out. I only use for water. I use paper plates for food. Thanks for the heads up. |

:( :( I have been using these bowls . In the trash they go and praying my baby's have no side affects from them :(. |
OMG! When is the US going to wake up! Mine eat of human dishes but who knows if they are safer or not! I do use dog bowls for water. Mine came from a local speciality dog store. Wonder if I should trash them? |
All my babies eat off Corelle. So do we! :D |

How awful! We use ceramic bowls. |
That's crazy!! I don't like the sound of stainless steel bowls, so we use ceramic. Now I'm really glad we do  |
I have used stainless steel bowls. Now I am worried. I think I'll just get rid of them and use the ceramic ones I have. I didn't get from Petco but still! I'm going to see if it says on the bowl where they came from. :( |
We used to use ceramic. Made in China. After awhile they got this horrible smell and wecould not get it out, even with bleach. I don't buy those anymore. We mostly used Pyrex glass bowls and paper plates. |
I don't understand why they are not coming out with the name of this foreign supplier. Of course most of what PetCo and Petsmart sell is made in China or some other third would nation. "One of our foreign suppliers" is not enough information for a pet owner to decide if the product they have in their home is part of this mess. I hope they have large notices about this in their stores but still many people will not be aware. I have used paper plates for feeding Gracie for quite some time and we use glass water dishes. The only product I have ever purchased from PetCo is my RinseAce and that is available at other outlets as well. I think anyone who purchases pet products from any of these pet stores or discount department stores is taking a risk with what is being imported from China these days. Companies do not even tell the consumer when there are ingredients added that come from China. |

Wow! Thanks for posting this! I wonder if we should be concerned about stainless steel in general. I wonder how many products went unnoticed. |

A pack of 1,000 6" plates is $25 at staples online. Perfect sized for the babies. No lead, no cobalt. I don't trust ceramic pet bowls - they had paint leaching years ago. I'm good with my glass water bowl. |
Tibbe's had his stainless steel bowls for over 4 years and I bought them at Wallmart, I think. I hope they are safe! Thanks for the heads up on the bowls because I was thinking it might be time to get him new bowls as I don't know the life of stainless steel. Now have to do some research on what to buy where. |
my guys are scared of stainless steel bowls...thank goodness! |
Gizmo eats off of my Fiesta ware! :p:rolleyes: |
