Biting Hello, I have a 3.5 pound Yorkie, Gizmo that will be two years old in September. He has always been super hyper but very sweet. A couple of weeks ago he started growling, barking and nipping at all of us. He would do this suddenly out of the blue as if trying to get our attention. This got progressively worse over several days. I did some research and started the Nothing is for free method of training with him. With this method of training your always have your dog do something (sit, stay, rollover, etc.) before he is allowed to do what he wants to do. Ex. Have the dog sit before you pick him up. In the past I already trained him to sit, down and stay. He has the sit and down very well, but we are still working on the stay. Anyway, this method seems to calm my Yorkie and things have been going much better. Then today my daughter and I were in the kitchen preparing breakfast and Gizmo ran over and bit my daughter on the back of her leg. Not a nip, but a bite. What could cause this behavior and how should I respond to it? This really concerns me as I can not have him biting people. Gizmo has always been very strong willed and active, but with LOTS of exercise his inside behavior has been pretty good until now. I am sorry this is so long, but I am very worried. Thanks, Kathy |
I'm sorry to hear this, their are several here that are good with training and hopefully will check in and give some advice..Be aware though that the weekend is slower so it may take awhile...good luck. |
I'm sorry you're dealing with this, it must be very stressful on your family. My first thought would be to have the vet check him out for anything physical going on, as they can act out when they are not feeling their best. Since you say this is a relatively new behavior, I'd rule out any illness or injury first off. |
My first thought was something must be wrong. Have you had his teeth checked lately? It sounds like it could be a medical issue. Good luck sending prayers your way. |
Please take your dog to the Vet. I agree with Nanahas3. This is not normal behavior. When it happens out of the blue my first thought is medical problems too. |
If this is unusual behavior for your dog then I would agree that there could be a health issue going on. Other than that I would wonder if your daughter had been playing with the dog? If so he could have thought the game was still going on and wanted to continue play if he was all wound up. If that is not the case then I would be concerned and have him checked out closely by the vet. He is not a puppy and that is behavior I would expect from a wound up puppy. |
