Introducing Ourselves 2 and a half months ago my 19 year old daughter bought a tiny yorkie puppy that was obviously too young to be away from its mother. Within a week she decided he was too much responsibility and asked me to find him a new home. Needless to say he never went anywhere and he has become the love of my life! I have had dogs and trained dogs in obedience and agility throughout my life but have never had the pleasure of owning a yorkie. For the past 2 months I have been using your site to get all of the information I needed to do what is right for him. I figured it was about time to introduce him. This is my Little Man and from what I have been told he is 7/8 Yorkie and 1/8 Maltese . He is the smartest dog I have ever owned and am looking forward to him being a big part of my life! Wanted to say what a wonderful site this is an how much information I have got over the last couple months. Thanks to reading about first haircut I was able to find a groomer and he got his first cut yesterday! Not sure how to attach files yet but you should be able to see his picture on the profile. I'm sure I will be asking a lot of questions in the future and just wanted to say thanks in advance! |

welcome , he is a beauty |
Thanks I think he's cute. He is only 2lbs at 16 wks so I'm worried about future health problems...he was advertised as a "micro" (cringe)... |

"micro", oh boy.....but he's still a sweetie! |

Lola my pup was about that weight at 16 weeks and now she is about 5.5 lbs which is right in the middle of the size standard for a yorkie. The micro teacups which for some reason seem to be all the rage:(:thumbdown are in the 2.5 to 3 lb range full grown so you should not have to worry about your little guy being way to small. Take lots of pictures because they grow up so quickly. It's hard to predict what the future will hold healthwise, but I have some advice for you that might help. I had 4 yorkies before being a member of yorkie talk and took their health for granted so I hated to spend extra money at the vet for things like blood tests, I always viewed it as a way for the vet to make more money. But being on YT and seeing how many problems there are because of bad breeding practices I started to realize the value of blood tests. When I bought Lola who is a mix at 16 weeks I immediately had a full panel done on her. While it will not tell you everything it is a good start and will give you a base to compare to as he ages. Make sure you request a full panel that gives you liver and kidney number and so forth. Congratulations and welcome to this crazy world of yorkies. |
I'm so glad you are here and you have your sweet little man! I hope you enjoy this site as much as we all do and that it helps you as much as it has helped me in living with a Yorkie - or any small dog. The itty-bitty dogs are all kind of a breed unto themselves and it seems they have unique problems and medical issues that one hardly would ever even hear about and certainly not know much about if it weren't for YorkieTalk. I can't wait to see bigger pictures of your little one once you learn how to upload pictures. I think they have to be 200 kb and 600 x 800 pixels or something like that in size. If you go to "Go Advanced" button below right of this box and on the next window quite far down on the page look for an HTML heading that says "Manage Attachments", clicking on it will take you to an Upload Photos Menu that will walk you through browsing "My Computer" and choosing a picture to upload. That will allow you to add pictures to your "Go Advanced" replies. But in your Profile, there is a place to create an album and there is a menu there that allows you to add photos also. It's been so long since I did that I can't recall a thing about how to do it but once you start poking around in your Profile section, you will be able to figure it out. Can't wait to see pix of your baby and fall in love with him as you have. Welcome to the club of Yorkie and Yorkie-mix owners and slaves! :) |
Welcome to Yt!! Your little man is adorable!! |
Hello, and welcome. He is so adorable! 2lbs at that age is pretty good. The concern is not so much about the size, though that can be an issue, but the breeding. Since it seems the breeders were using size as a selling point they more than likely knew very little about breeding healthy dogs. This kind of breeder tends to produce more genetic issues. Hopefully this little guy will be one of the lucky ones. |
Our Laddy was 2 lbs at that age and is now 4.8 at almost 4 and has been very healthy. Your baby is a cutie pie. Welcome to YT. |
Thanks for the warm welcomes! I'm glad to hear that about his size because this small is just so scary for me. The smallest I had before was a 10 pound schnauzer years ago and I have blue heelers now... needless to say this is an adjustment lol... but I'm loving every minute of him. Thank you so much for the directions on the pictures. Lord knows I have plenty :D I had a complete blood panel done on him a couple weeks ago just to try to be proactive about any problems he might have. All came back well. So far his knees seem good too but the vet said he obviously needs them checked when he gets older. Again thank you for everything and I will get some more pictures up soon ...if I do say so myself I think he is adorable! All of your puppies are just so fun to look at they are all so individual. He came into my life by default and has made it much brigher. It amazes me everyday how something so small can take up so much room in my heart! It's great to find a site that knows what I'm talking about! |

Hi Little Man! Aren't you a cutie pie! You think you love him now? Just wait...it only gets better :) Welcome to YT! |
figured out how to put pictures in the album Thank you again for all the warm welcomes! I uploaded some pictures into his albums so you can see how tiny he was when I got him. I also included a picture of him and my heeler kate who basically took him in as her own and helped raise him. She taught him all the boundaries and things that he should have learned by staying with his mother longer. I do wildlife rehab also and she has helped me with many small critters in the past... she is fixed but has a very strong maternal side. He has grown up to be a little gentleman so far. I do have 1 question though... he is mature coat is coming through blue and his ears and beard are red... the top of his head is coming in white lol! Is this typical or is this the 1/8 maltese coming out in him? Doesn't matter to me just curious ;) Actually 2 questions... he loves to sleep on the pillow with his head on my head or next to it is it typical or is it because I got him so young? Was thinking he was so tiny when I got him maybe it developed into a security thing. Needless to say I love it |
Thank you everyone. I have his picture is in the album now!! |

Hi...your baby is adorable! I was wondering about the 1/8 Maltese...were you given this information by whomever bred him? I am just being curious...ok, nosey,...lol Also, except for walks and pottying, I wasn't aware that Yorkies have other positions besides being on you, on your lap, next to you, on another surface facing you...wriggling from all the tail wagging or hippity-hop dancing and bouncing, on your pillow, behind/under your pillow, at least one paw on you somewhere, on your computer keyboard, being carried around by you...did I forget any? lol I guess what I am getting at is that he sounds like a normal Yorkie to me. I have two "Siamese Twins" (Yorkies), Brody and Mia. If I cannot see them, I need to check on them to make sure nothing's wrong. I'd say you are blessed...your baby snuggles because HE LOVES YOU! IMHO These are very owner-centric companions, but never forget that they are also "terriers" ('terriorists'/'terrorists' lol) who were bred to kill rats. If it is color changes you are wondering about, you'll want to photograph him often. You will be amazed at all the color changes these kaleidoscope dogs (Yorkies) go through. Also, it is quite normal for them to have very light hair on their heads when clearing black to tan. Check out Bear: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...r-500x375-.jpg from: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...-so-wrong.html When I got Brody at 14 months old, his head was pale platinum blond with blue (grey) streaks. The blue streaks got lighter and lighter colors of blue (silver) and are almost completely gone. Then one day you could see a darker tan 'glow' as his hair changed. Now his head and face are a beautiful golden tan color, and the pale platinum blond color is only on his neck. It is my understanding that it is not uncommon for them to take 3 years for their adult color to fully mature...hope I am using correct terminology. In fact, conformation shows allow uncleared coats (black and sooty colors mixed with tan) on young adult and juvenile Yorkies until they are 3 years old, if I am not mistaken. Congratulations! You are in for so much fun...:yorkiesar |
Welcome to YT...i had to laugh about him sleeping next to your head Yogi lays his head on my pillow every night and he has to touch me while sleeping :) you will find info here on about any subject ;) |
Welcome!! Welcome! Your baby is adorable! :) |

Most Yorkies have no undercoat to warm them so they just naturally want to cuddle no matter what age you get them at. Gracie has slept with me since she was a puppy. Many times she will get under my covers and cuddle up next to me. If your guy is only sharing your pillow then you have much more room than I do at night time! |
blown away by the warm reception I seriously am.. thank you all for your messages and comments it's overwhelming... in a good way. :) I considered myself an experienced owner, although not with this breed. I thought I was going a little overboard in my love toward him and thinking how much smarter he was then a lot of the larger breed puppies at his age. There is a definite difference in them and I love it!! Probably didn't hurt that I was going thru empty nest syndrome at the same time I got him lol... I will tell you about him being 1/8 maltese... as I said the "breeder" sold this too young puppy to a 19 year old girl... my daughter, and I wasn't too happy about it. Well the damage was done so I contacted her to get as much information as I could, before telling her what I thought of the situation! She told me the father was a purebred non registered 4lb yorkie and the female was 3/4 yorkie 1/4 Maltese and was 5lbs. She said he was the smallest out of 6 and that's why she charged so much for him (900 I almost died!). I asked her to see pictures of both parents and she did send them to me. To my surprise the father was a very nice looking little yorkie... And the mother was a very nice looking little one too bt she had more rounded ears... I couldn't really see the maltese in her other than that. When I showed the pictures to my daughter she did confirm that was the to that she saw at her house. After I got the pictures and the information that I needed regarding health etc ... I pull lightly as I could told her what I thought about selling too young of puppies like that and also to a teenager. That's about all I know about him, to me he looks almost pure bred but he does have a different look to him then most of the Full blooded ones that I have seen |
Guess I should proofread when I use the voice recorder...hopefully that previous post made sense. |
