Himalayan chews = loose stools? Ah, darnit, I finally found a chew that Izzy can't destroy in minutes and I *think* it upset her tummy. I probably let her have it too long, she was able to chew off quite a bit of it before I noticed and took it away. She had loose stools the day after getting the new chewies. Gave her pumpkin and it firmed right back up again. So now I'm wondering if I shouldn't let her have those anymore:( How about Antlerz? Anyone have any reviews on those? |
but it also may just take a bit for her system to adjust. i dont recall if that happened to cedric but he also likes the bullies better and the himas are sorta second choice. hope you find something that agrees with her! |
I think their site says something about causing tummy aches in 10% of dogs. It is pretty much really hard cheese, so no surprise. JMO, I don't think they are particular good for dogs. |
We have been using sweet potatoe chews around here. They dont last as long as I would like but they are more digestiable than rawhide and atleast have some vitamins in them. We havent had any tummy problems with them. I do have one dog that has the table manners of a gorilla and therefore I have to really watch her to make sure she doesnt choke. |
You know what I have learned in my 4 years of owning a Yorkie- ( in my experience with MY dog) All those chew things do is cause issues! Peanut has had issues with Bully sticks, and Texas Toothpicks to Himalayan chews! My vet told me sometimes (not sure about the Himalayan chews) bacteria gets on those sticks and that is what causes tummy issues! I will not give Peanut any type of chew anything anymore- It is really not worth the Vet bills! He also doesn’t miss them, the minute I pulled at the Texas Toothpicks and Bully Sticks is the minute he forgot about them and moved on to something else!! That is just my take on it- :D Hope Izzy feels better!! |
I have read that some dogs do have problems with the Himalayan chews. I guess it all depends on if they are getting enough of the chew to actually eat it. The Himalayan chew is made out of some sort of goat milk product I think. Some of the bully sticks are way too soft and dogs can chew off pieces of them. I did give Gracie one of the poorer quality bully sticks once and we did have a problem with it. I now only buy her the Best Bully brand and I only buy them big enough that she cannot eat them. She is a pretty small dog so I get her the regular thickness in the 12" length. If your dog is a real fierce chewer and can bite off pieces I would get the thicker ones or even the braided ones. They should be able to chew and soften some of it but not bite off pieces. Now that Gracie is a grown up she doesn't chew as much or for as long a period of time. When she goes back to the chew it has hardened up again and she has to soften it up again. She never really eats pieces of it. She just chews like a dog would chew a raw bone. |
We have been using the himalayan chews for about two years now and no problems. I do not let them chew on them all day, though. I usually take them away after 20 minutes at the most. Good luck |
Okay so I pulled all the chews for a few days, until her stool was firm for a day or two. She was allowed to have one for about an hour each day since, and no more issues. I wonder if she just ate something out in the yard (they are SO fast and sneaky!!) and that's what made her poo so soft? Luna isn't really interested in them anymore at all, though, of course:rolleyes: |
I think my dogs have iron stomachs, LOL. I give them bullys, him. chews, and texas toothpicks without any problems. What I do is set my timer for 10-15 minutes and keep a close eye on them for any issues. I think this helps cut down on any issues extended times can cause with upset tummy. Mine would chew until they're gone and I do think that can cause more problems. |

Luna won't even chew hers anymore, the first day she attacked it and now she has no interest at all. She's like that:rolleyes: I would like for her to chew to help keep her teeth strong. |
