anal gland issues!!! HELP! Last February Gizmo's left anal gland abscessed and unforantly had to be drained at the vet. So since then i have been getting his anal glands expressed at the vet every 3-4 weeks per the doctor. So last Tuesday i took him in to get his dental and they also expressed his anal glands while he was under. The vet said they were very full ( i had just had them done 3 weeks earlier). So today i noticed a lump on his behind while i was bathing him. It was purplish and on the left side of his anus. Immediately i panicked and called the vet. She saw us today and it seems like it was starting to abscess but since Gizmo was on antibiotics for his dental last week it helped keep it at bay. So poor guy now has a big red spot on his bottom. We are continuing the antibiotics for another week and using warm compresses on his bottom. We are hoping that this goes away on its own and we wont have to have him cut and then have it drained. Gizmo has been through so much in his short life i cant stand seeing him in pain :( Has anyone had any problems with their yorkies and abscess? If so what else can i do to prevent this from happening again???? The only other option i think i have is to start doing them myself ever week and hope this doesn't happen anymore. |
Anal gland issues are linked to allergies, either food or seasonal. Since your baby is having a chronic problem I would guess it's from the food. You should have your vet show you how to do the anals & you can do them at bath time whenever you bathe him. This way he will stay cleaned out & comfy as they are painful when full. They are really easy to do & will save you lots on vet calls. |
I've heard they are related to allergies. What kind of allergies? Gizmo has had a rough year was diagnosed with pancreatitis in January and then the anal gland issue. He then developed colitis ( i think from the 3 different antibiotics he had to be one). So we had to change his diet around to something low fat, and also allergen free. So hes eating natural balance venison and sweet potato and i also cook brown rice and boil turkey breasts for him. |
He may be allergic to a food he's getting. If it constant I would get allergy testing don. I have one who has seasonal allergies & his act up every spring & fall. OOOO, You are in Cali arent you ? I used to have a pup yrs ago who was allergic to the water in Cali, tried so many food changes trying to figure it out & then we moved to Idaho & they magically went away. |
Grain, high irritant foods. Try a grain free diet and so note dehydration and actually a lack of fats in the diet can causr anal gland issues. Bb has wilderness TOTW id awesome no recall in your distribution area, both are low irritant humane grade grainless hypoallergenic foods. A specialty raw diet may be needed. Honestly raw barf and model prey feeding are a great thing to look into. |
