Getting used to a new bed? Roxie's had the same bed for the nearly 3 years she has been with us. It's now faded and lumpy from her use and from washing it so many times. It's also quite stinky despite the weekly washings. I bought Roxie a new bed a while back. It fits the decor better and is more suited for her size (the old one is a bit big for her). However, every time I put it out she refuses to go near it, and we just go back to the old bed. Any suggestions as to how I can get her quickly accustomed to a new bed? Thanks! |
Hmmm. I wonder if you were to rub the old bed on the new one, transferring some of the good stinkies, maybe that would help? Or cut a piece of the cover off the old one and put it inside the new bed? It's so funny how picky these babies can be:laugh: |

He he!!! :D Harry had a bed that he adored, his puppy bed....a donut bed, pale blue with white spots. He outgrew it though, and used to curl up in a teensy ball to try to fit into it...I thought he's going to end up a hunch-back at this rate...!!! :) Bought him a beautiful, match-the-decor, lay-out-in-it-as-much-as-you-like little number - he hated it!!! Used to walk around the edges of it, kind of eye-ing it sideways, as though his life depended on not touching it!!! :D So I did exactly what was suggested, cut out the bottom bit of the old bed and put it in the corner of the new. That's a great idea...but I just washed the old bed...will it still work? What if she never takes to the new bed and now I've destroyed the old one? :eek: She sniffed around the new bed quite a bit this morning. She even got in it for like 2 seconds. Then she jumped out and has been laying on every other surface in the house except for that bed (the couch, the chair, the blanket, the carpet, the floor, my lap)...LOL! I put her blanket on top of it for now, hoping that will entice her eventually. |

Yeah, a piece of the old bed should still work. You even said in your OP that you can't get the smell out despite washing, so there ya go;) It's worth a shot, anyway. I think she'll eventually accept the new bed anyway, once it's not "new" anymore. OH, or you could try putting a t-shirt that you've worn in the bed, just thought of that one. |
You guys are so awesome! I put one of my shirts in the bed after I wore it all day, and BAM! she's in the bed! She has still been laying on the floor and the chair a lot, but she has been in the bed a lot of the time, and at night. Yay! |

Well, we've gone backwards. Roxie started avoiding the new bed completely again. She was sleeping everywhere else, including on the brand new pillows I just bought for the couch. I put her old bed back, and she won't sleep there now either. What the heck is going on? How do I get her to sleep in ANY bed? Do I have to get rid of all my couch pillows and blankets? Even when she has no choice she doesn't want to sleep in any of the beds now! Ugh! |
:confused: Oh dear! And I thought you were sorted! :) Is it very hot in New York at the moment? Wondering if it's all too kind of fat and squashy around her? REWARD call her to the bed have her sit on it and treat. Hide her favorite treat and or toys on the bed. Toss the old bed after you cut a piece of it, to tuck in the new bed. Move the bed where the action is, it is portable (unless you are training her to use the bed as 'Place Stay') every time she uses the bed praise gently (over enthusiastic praise will make her come to you) Hope this helps. |
