When do Yorkies stop growing? I'm trying to guess how big Issy will be. She was 3ozs at birth. At 16 weeks she was 24 oz. 2 weeks ago (23 weeks) she was 37ozs I just weighed her at 25 weeks and she's now 55oz! Up until now she was charting out to be 3 - 3.5lbs. Now it's looking more like 4.5-5. My breeder is having a fit. Out of all the dogs in that litter, she was the best example of the breed, except she was too small. That was the primary reason she was adopted to me. So at what age do they stop growing? |
My Raelle stoppped growing at around 7mths. Orion stopped at 9mths. Not sure if that is the norm. |
my oscar stopped growing at 7 months. all yorkies are different though . i hear some grow until a year or more.. |
Range for Yorkie is 4-7lbs?? Whats the problem it's still in the range and small? What scale a good food one?? |
Remy grew some after she turned a year old. It wasn't so much hieght and length as weight... she was so thin and I was very happy when she reached 4 lbs. She is now a little over 5 lbs:eek: just perfect btw.. she was charted to be 3.5 lbs. Her parents were both 5 lbs. |

Jack was the same - he stopped but then just after he turned a year, he added some weight (which I was thankful for) and weighs 5lbs 6 oz now. He is perfect! |

I guess I should reiterate that *I* am not the one having a fit. My breeder is because if she had known, she would have kept her due to her disposition and bloodline. She was just unusually small at both (unusual for her). All of her dogs are 5 and 6 lbs. I'd love Issy if she were 50 lbs. It's not her size I care about. It's her personality. She's family. Naughty, but she's still family. |
Yes a healthy heavier weight I like better. If they get sick they have a few ounce to lose without or much any problems. I had a tiny dog and didn't like it much. Always worried about him. |
I had Trinket to the vet today. She weighed 2.8. One pound from a month ago. She is 14 weeks old. The vet said she will be lucky if she makes 5 pounds. Hope so. |
Mack quit growing around 7 months, but Bevo didn't hit his real growth spurt until he turned 1. He about doubled his size to almost 6 pounds. |
Sorry to be so general. I think all of mine reached their adult height and body legnth by 7 or 8 months but, they all added weight until they were about a year old or so. |
Laddy was 3.8 lbs at a year and at 2 is 4.8. He filled out a lot after we got Kyra and he was eating her puppy food lol. Kyra is 8 months and 2.8 lbs. She has been stuck there for a few months. We have started her on Missing Link hoping it will put on a few ounces before her spay at a year old. She charted 2.8 so she is there and Laddy charted at 3.8. |
Gracie grew past her first birthday. She attained her frame size at about 11 months but then put on some more weight until she was about 14 months. I guess she was a slow grower. He normal weight is about 5lbs though she gained 4oz last winter. We have been doing lots of walking so she is back down to 5lbs even. Some have growth spurts while others grow slow and steady. There were only 2 puppies in Gracie's litter and Gracie was quite a bit smaller than her sister was. She never lacked in energy or terrier personality though. I have seen runts that ended up being the largest of the litter so it is very hard to estimate an adult size by birth weight or even the size at 3 months. I just fell for Gracie as soon as I saw her. Her sister was actually a strikingly beautiful puppy but Gracie just had that something in eyes. |
According to the chart Miss Priss was supposed to be 4-4.5 lbs, she grew at the beginning and has practically stopped in the last 2 months. She weighs around 6 lbs but doesn't even look that right now. She has a silky coat and I think that makes her look leaner, I would like to see her fill out some but time will tell. Her mom was 7 lb and her dad was 6 lb. You just never can tell how big they will get. I think they are precious no matter their size. |

Hazel was about the same size at her 14 week check-up. My records show that she was 40 ounces or 2 lbs 12 ounces at that visit. She weighed in at 74 ounces or 4lbs 10 ounces at 29 weeks, roughly 6 months, and has only added another half a pound since then. She is one year old today and ranges from a little under 5 lbs to a little over depending on how much she eats. I absolutely love the name Trinket ~ too cute! |
stop growing Yes I wondered that too .Reuben is just over 5 months and weighs 1.5 kilo.Iv,e posted some pics of him. What do you think. How much should they sleep? |
Oops, I meant that Miss Priss's dad weighed 5 lbs. My mind said that but my fingers typed something else.. |
Lucy initially lost a few ounces when I got her - and that worried me. At 6 months she weighs 5lb 6oz. My breeder expects her to top off at around 6 - 6.5 lbs. Also, I think when you're dealing with such low weight to begin with, using different scales may make a difference too. When I first picked up Lucy, I was told she was 5 lbs. When I went to the vet, she was 4.5 lbs. When I weighed her in my home, she was 4lbs 10 oz. Now, I'm just going by my scale. As long as she's gaining, then she's eating and I'm not worried.:p I met a girl recently who thought she bought a 'tiny' and ended up with a stocky little yorkie that weighs almost 8 lbs. Unless your breeder has a really complete history/pedigree of your pup, then it's difficult to even guess at the final weight. Best wishes, Tracey |
Varies among breeding lines. My boys are full brothers from different litters and both had a late growth spurt -- not weight, but height and length -- at 11 months. They both developed muscle mass their second year. |

Hi everyone - I'm new to the forum (and to having a yorkie). I hope this question is on topic here... I just got Mandie last Tuesday from a couple who were disappointed in her size. They told me, "we thought she was a regular yorkie and she is a teacup." (btw, I know there is technically no such thing) My question is this...at 4 months old, they said she was 3 lbs. I took her to my vet yesterday (she is now 1 week shy of 5 months old) and she is 3 lbs and 10 oz. From some threads that I have read on here, that seems pretty much "on par" for a healthy, standard sized yorkie. Am I right? I love her whether she is small or standard, but I'm curious what you all think. At 19 weeks..is 3lbs, 10 oz about right? (sorry to piggy back on the OP's thread) |
