BTW that looks like a chicken hip bone. |
An animal could have taken the bones from someone's garbage or it could be the remains of a dead animal that an animal dug up. It sounds to me like animals are getting into someone's garbage and dragging it around. Some people do put corn cobs out to feed birds and squirrels but it is more likely garbage. People should not leave garbage outside in bags but many do. I always have to check out our backyard before Gracie is allowed in it. Cats tend to leave things out there at night. Gracie will put any new object in her mouth so I have to be two steps ahead of her all the time. |
I thought it looked likea Pork Chop bone also but now I am wondering too if maybe it was a small animal. Very strange, hopefully it was someone being careless or thought they were showing the dogs so love with a special treat. I agree with the poster who suggested showing it to your Vet. |
Just wanted to add my prayer that your sweet pups are okay. Thank goodness you are so aware and that you found the corn cobs before they had the chance to ingest more. |
It being a bone I'd say it's more likely someone gave it to you're dogs as a treat than that they were trying to poison them. A lot of people still seem to think bones are ok :( |
Praying that your dogs are ok. It seems we always have more to worry about. |
my dh said he thought they looked like chicken bones. Sounds almost like someones lunch or dinner:cool: One time I found food like that in our yard... it turned out to be the lawn people. I told them I understood breaks and such but it was gross to leave the food behind and was dangerious to my dogs! I hope the pups are ok and you don't find anymore bones... |
Everything seems to be fine today. No more puking and I know Libby pooped this morn...not sure about Maddie, but they are all acting quite normal, thank goodness! I know this bone isn't chicken and still wonder what in the world it is. I'll keep a close eye on them, but quite relieved there is no more puking! |
Good news! It's scary when more than one pup starts up with a problem... really makes one wonder! |
The less time my dog spends outside the better. Most mornings I will follow him out and keep an eye on him. Granted, I am more concerned about a hawk or another vermin hurting or killing him, but a creepy neighbor is just another reason. I also am concerned with things he could get into that I don't know are in discrete places that only he can get to. I used to feel bad for not letting him stay outside but now he is used to it and usually comes right back in. He goes out and within 3 minutes he's barking at the door to come back in. I like it that way. Bigger dogs I never worried about but my dude only weighs 7 pounds, and I'm a hypochondriac when it comes to him since I saw him face to face with the skunk. If he wasn't so aggressive I wouldn't care, but he's so aggressive and will approach anything that comes out of the brush. He doesn't know whats good for him. Sorry to hear about your dogs, glad that they are ok now. |

Before we had the boys, we put corn cobs out for the squirrels to play with. They always tried to drag them away and carry them home, but they were too heavy. I never thought about what danger this may pose to a dog if the cobs were dragged into another yard. :( |
I am sorry. Are any of your neighbors children? And could they be passing your dogs table scraps? I think the bone looks like a ham bone or ham hock. I don't know if another animal would have brought that stuff into your yard not knowing your neighborhood and the kinds of animals there, but it does sound like something the neighborhood kids would do in my area. What ever it is.......scary.......knowing how sick it can make your dogs. |
I totally forgot how we found the neighborhood racoon's trash stash behind our shed last year where he'd use the neighbor's fountain to clean and eat his stuff and sit between the corner of the three yards and toss his trash into the corner behind the shed. |
Definitely could be a raccoon's take from neighboring trash. I've had neighbors 'treat' my other (big) dogs...not the Yorkies...who spent time alone in a fenced back yard. I personally am totally opposed to anyone feeding my pets without permission. My big dogs loved corn cobs to chew on, and ate them, too, with never an incident...but I don't give them to the Yorkies either...never gave them to my Yorki-Poo. It might be difficult to nail down the exact source of the loot, but for certain, you'll have to keep an eye on it. My Yorkies have found 'goodies' (contraband...lol) in my yard, too, so I watch to see just how interested in the ground they are so hopefully I can stop them from getting anything they think is food or treat. |
I got my degree in anthropology and did my Senior Thesis on identifying animal bones. I'm fairly sure that's a scapula (shoulderblade), but I can't tell what kind of animal it is without a comparative collection and seeing it in person. Hope my useless degree was helpful to you :D:rolleyes: I doubt it was poisoned, people who poison dogs usually use meat, meatballs, or something a dog will gobble right up instantly. But if it was from a rotting wild animal, well, think of all the bacteria! No wonder they are vomiting. |
