puppy care i have just sent my deposit for my furbaby boy! I will be getting him the middle of Feb. I am so excited. I got him from, Ilovemyabbie. She has been great too. I have had a million questions, and I still have a while to go! Anyway, does anyone know where I can find info, or have info, on what to do as far as taking care of my new boy when I get him home? Is there anything special I need to do or have? I will be driving to pick him up, so no flying for him! Thanks guys, I can't wait to get him home. |
:p Congratulations on your upcoming adoption. How exciting to count down the days till you get to bring your new Yorkie boy home. Since you are driving him home it's safest for your fur baby to travel in kennel, add a blanket inside for a soft, comfy ride. Bring some bottled water w/ you incase he needs a drink. Also, potty pads. Your furbaby wont be fully vaccinated so it's not safe to let him roam around on unfamilar grounds, and the potty pads will allow him a place to tee tee. The list of items needed at times seem never ending, LOL. :p You have the basic supplies like food/water dishes, bed, blankets, Nutrical, food, kennel, toys, grooming aids, Yorkie handbooks, etc. A good trustable vet is very important also w/ their phone #'s handy. Once home it's important not to over stress the Yorkie, they need a lot of rest. Over stimulation/stress can cause a hypoglycemic episode. Congratulations again, I'am sure you are so very excited. :p |
I think Schatzie's given you some good tips I just wanted to say Congratulations on the new pup. I remember when I was waiting then finally brought them home it was such an exciting time. |
Thanks! Is there anything special that I will need to do for him? Besides giving lots of love and time to adjust? Oh, I have a long list of things to get, better start now, so it won't seem so expensive, I loaded my shopping cart online at petsmart.com with about 300.00 worth of stuff, will have to wait until after the holidays though to actually buy it all! I am hoping to get more pics soon! |
Although I haven't read it personally, I'm told this is an excellent book about puppy care and I would definitely read it if I were planning to get another pup: Before and After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved Dog by Ian Dunbar. if you have kids....The yorkshire for dummies book is very easy to read and funny. There are tons of books, but the best way to learn....read and search the posts on here. I've been doing that for awhile. Especially the training and toy one! Some of the posts are better than americas funniest home video's. I remember one post about the xpen that had me laughing for hours! |
I definitely want to get the Yorkies for Dummies books. I need things to be simple to understand! I am getting excited. I just hope Amanda can get some good pictures. I think I have narrowed down the food decision. I am gonna do Cesar puppy food and Royal Canin. I am almost as bad as when I had my daughter, buying stuff and driving my husband nuts! |
That's what my breeder uses for food! But you are going to have to use what the current breeder uses and then wean them off if its different. I know exactly what you mean about buying stuff..... |
Oh yeah, I am going nuts "window" shopping on the internet. Thanks for the info on weaning. I am still trying to convince my husband that it is okay to dress our boy. I told him we have a boxer to be the big "tough" looking puppy! Even though she wouldn't hurt a fly. |
girls are easier to dress...so many bows and options.....as with kids! I'm getting a boy yorkshire on january 2. We tried putting a fleece coat on him yesterday at the breeders and he spent 10 minutes wiggling out of it.... |
