Gizmos pancreatitc enzymes are elevated AGAIN :( So Gizmo had a bout of pancreatitis back in February. So our vet had him on hills i/d canned for a little while and then transitioned him to Natural Balance Venison & Sweet Potato (the fat % is minimum 10%). He seemed to do well on that for a while. We had his amylase and lipase (pancreatic enzymes) checked in March/April and they were great. Yesterday i took Gizmo in to get his dental and thank goodness i got his blood work done because his amylase was a little low and his lipase was elevated again! He hasn't show any signs or symptoms like he had last time. Our vet put Gizmo on a vitamin called Oxstrin. Apparently the internal medicine vet suggested it for Gizmo and other dogs that have more than one episode of pancreatitis. Has anyone given Oxstrin before???? I am in nursing school and unfortunately know a little too much for my own good and am freaking myself out about him. |
NB at 10% minimum is not giving the maximum fat percent. I'd maintain on an rx food or a diet put ogether by a veterinary nutritionist. |
I wouldn't change foods unless the vet suggests it. The vitamin that they put your dog on may very well make up for whatever may be needed in his diet. I would ask to speak to the vet on the phone to get all my questions answered. |
I would change foods. My dog is a two time pancreatitis survivor. After his second episode, he was placed on a 3% fat home cooked diet for the rest of his life. It may sound low, but his blood actually goes lipemic if it is upped at all. You might want to ask your vet about RC Gastrointestinal lowfat kibble, it's lower in fat than Hill's and I've had a great result with using this for convenience for my dog. |
