Question About Ears Standing Up My Yorkie is 12 weeks old today. Her right ear started standing up on and off when she was 8 weeks old. Now her right ear has stayed up since about 9 weeks old. Her left ear has not gone up yet. Is it normal for one ear to go up long before the other? Do they normally both go up at about the same time? |
Toki's ear were both up when we first got her. The next day, one of them flopped. A week later that ear came back up and the other one flopped lol. Her ears alternated flopping for a while and both eventually stood straight up. I think the uneven ear flopping is cute! Perfectly normal! |
I'll love her however her ears turn out. I won't bother trying to make her left ear stand by taping it, etc. I have tried rubbing it sometimes though, which seemed to help her right ear go up initially. I would prefer it if both of her ears went up though. Its such a strong trait, and she's so young, I'm sure it will happen eventually. It's just so weird that one is completely up and the other is so far behind! I've kept her ears shaved to encourage them to stand too. |
I wouldn't worry about your baby's ears not standing up. At 12 weeks a yorkie puppy is going through its teething phase, and that will last several weeks. For some reason, nature knows better and puts everything into the building of permanent teeth and the ears tend to get floppy for awhile. It most likely will pass and the ears will stand on their own. Just help out by keeping the top third shaved down so there won't be that extra weight on them. Good luck!:p |
Ears My dogs ears are both turned down and go up when she is alerted to something. I read that keeping the hair on the end of the ears shaved helps to have them stand up as it does not weigh them down. I like them down and would not change a thing.:):animal36 |

Ally's breeders told me not to rub her head so her ears would stand. I think her ears started falling around 6 months so I had her ears trimmed and they popped back up by the next morning. (Ally has silky hair.) Tia has cotton hair and her ears fell soon after we got her. Her hair is so thick that it weighs down her ears so I trim them constantly so they stay up. It's easy to do and it keeps my babies ears perky....just like them. lol Good luck! |

I would keep the inside and the outside of the ears shaved, and tape the ear up. You also can add a little extra calcium like some plain greek unflavored yogurt with no added sweeteners or low fat cottage cheese. |
My Jackie is 4 months old and her ears don't stand up at all. We are currently shaving them and we'll see how that'll go. Yorkie Talkers, do you think it's too late for my little one? |

I'm sure her left ear will go up in time. Luckily, she eats her high-quality Innova puppy food readily. I would think that the Innova has adequate calcium for puppies but I'm not sure. She also likes chewing on her little deer/elk antler, which is supposed to be a good source of calcium. I am keeping the top 1/3 of the inside and outside of her ears shaved. If her left ear doesn't start standing in a couple of weeks, I will try feeding her plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese. Thank you for that suggestion. :) |
