Tips for reverse sneezing? Does yout baby ever get that? Joel has done it a few times here and there only for like 3 seconds, he makes that "honking" noise and snorts around trying to catch his breath but it happened earlier today after his walk(he carried a nectarine the whole walk:rolleyes:)and tonight he is doing it, it happens on and off in about 1min, but thats a long time for a puppy that doesn't know whats going on. I feel so bad when it happens because he'll look at my eyes when its happening and he only ever does that when he needs help or is trying to tell me something:( I've tried gently rubbing his throat but it didn't help. And I took him outside and still was doing it. I also heard of blocking the nose so he breaths through his mouth but he wouldn't let me try it,lol Eventualy it stopped but I was wondering what anyone else does if it happens to your baby? I told him he gets to sleep in my bed tonight. |
Yes it happens to my Zach alot. I took him to the vet because I thought it was CT but the vet says it's most likely an alergy. She gave an antihistimen and something she called doggie Ropertusen. There really isn't much you can do for it I tried rubbing his throat. You really should get him to a vet to find out for sure. |
Are you sure its reverse sneezing and not CT because honking is a symptom of CT. |
my little Emy sounds like a cough/hairball kind of thing. She did it today after I brought her in from a walk. She coughed and I saw a little something on the kitchen floor, I thought it was grass, but it was a little piece of phlegm. She only seems to cough one short time with a little gagging like sound and thats it....maybe this is allergies?? She doesn't even do it everyday.... |
Libby has reverse sneezing quite often and I just hold my fingers over her nostrils for a short time and it normally stops the reverse sneezing quickly. |
Mia does the 'reverse sneezing' thing and when she does, I pick her up, putting upward pressure under/against her diaphragm with my right hand (almost a one-handed 'Heimlich' maneuver to help push air out the 'right' way), then put the heel of my left hand over her nostrils, and my fingers on top of her head to snug up the block. I block her nostrils for a few seconds until her breathing settles down...she will inhale through her mouth and swallow a few times, too. I continue to 'settle' her with soft conversation ("it's okay...breathe...breathe..."), snuggling, and caressing under her chin, etc. until she is calmer and breathing normally. It 'spooks' her when the 'reverse sneezing' starts, and it is usually only when she gets gets all excited and jumping around...like she 'forgets' how to breathe in all that excitement...and she does not do it every time she gets excited either. Mia has no breathing issues from running or playing hard, etc., but when she gets the reverse sneezing, she will run to me for help...she doesn't like it much. It will stop on its own...rather, her breathing will correct itself after a bit...but she knows I can help her stop it much faster. Brody has had a few reverse sneezes, and I handle them the same way. Granddaughter Chi had reverse sneezes while I was puppy sitting her, too, and I handled them the same way...before I got Brody and Mia. Incidentally, if humans drink too fast and it goes 'down the wrong pipe' they might try continuing sipping and swallowing instead of coughing and hacking. It's tricky at first, but I discovered this trick by accident...just tried it once after thinking about Mia and the reverse sneezing and why what I do works, etc., and, amazingly, it fixed the coughing and sputtering very quickly! So, now I always grab my drink and start sipping and swallowing...and it's hard to do it at first, but I just continue to drink and it makes the 'hacking up a lung' effect disappear very quickly. The sooner you start drinking again, the more quickly it seems to work. |
When Barney reverse sneezes, I take him outdoors for more humid air because he has it when it is dry in the winter from the heat or dry in the summer from air conditioning. If he is really bad, I run some hot water and sit in the bathroom with him close to the steam which helps. Holding the fingers over the nostrils works well too, but sometimes, it won't stop until I do the above. |
Thanks for all the tips:) I tried holding his nose before but he freaked out, maybe when he's used to it and knows it will help him he'll let me do it. Also the CT stuff scares me, if a dog has CT wouldn't the snorting and honking be constant, he hasn't done it at all today so im hoping it was just the reverse sneezing. |
Oliver does the reverse sneeze off and on... He runs to me immediately and you can tell it does scare him.. I pick him up and talk to him softly, and usually it's over within 30 seconds... |

The throat massaging vets reccomed has been proven dangerous in Torkies. Use a cupped hand over snout to stop sneezing also use a grain free diet abd appropriately height raised feeder. Teaching your dog to blow its nose is hard but dramatically sucessful |
