Why do so many people have a problem with... Males lifting their legs? I have been reading every neuter related thread I can find on here and it seems like a really common concern. Not marking or anything, but the actual physical act of lifting the leg. Why is this an issue with owners? I am so confused... |
Well, when they squat like a female, they pee on the ground. When they lift their leg, they pee on something, furniture, tree, that type of thing. Easier to clean up pee inside on the floor than the corner of your sofa! BTW, some dogs will STILL lift their leg if neutered. Generally though, if neutered around six months of age, they don't. Well, Mojo lifts his leg. The only real problem I've had with it is when he's used a pee pad in the house. Sometimes his aim isn't so great. :rolleyes: Honestly, it's not that big of an issue, though. I love my little guy whether he's got good aim or not! |
Well peeing inside is conditioning whether male or female... But what is wrong with peeing on trees?? I guess I can see how going on a wee pad might be hard though...but then I have never ever wanted a dog trained to go INSIDE. |

Tibbe used to squat until about 1 1/2 years ago at about 3 1/2 years, when he amended his pee position with a leg lift. He was neutered at about age 11 mos. & is almost 5 now. Since then he's more and more becoming a squatting-leg-lifter - squats first just like a puppy and then out will fly his right leg - never the left - just the right, and while he is still squatting. It's so funny - he can't decide which is best to do or doesn't know to do just one or the other - and I guess he wants to be macho all the while still liking the squat he did for so long so he just does both!!! He's hilarious to watch pee!!! A squatting-leg-lifter! But he has never ever peed on furniture or anything in the house so I could care less how he pees. |
Joel is 7 months and outside he lifts his leg on EVERYTHING, at first it was cute, I thought it was "manly"lol but now its getting annoying because he's trying to mark stuff instead of just walking, and he just start doing it in the house.:eek: I need to get him nuetered, :) |

Lifting their leg and marking is two different things. I have owned FEMALES who lift their leg.as far as marking...anywhere outside is fine with me. :) |

My biggest problem with leg-lifting came from when I had a toy poodle. He only weighed about 5lbs and he'd lift his leg so high that it was almost straight up vertical. Then of course...he'd pee all the down side of the opposite leg! It was even worse when it was windy outside, which it nearly always is in central Oklahoma!! So it was a constant battle to keep him clean because the pee would dry up and leave crusty places all along his leg. And you just can't really get that stuff out, even right away when we'd get back inside, without a full fledged bath. Never have that problem with my perfect little lady Yorkie. Of course, we loved Zach enough to overlook this minor inconvenience, but it is large part of the reason that we decided on a girl after we lost Zach! -C |

Yeah I don't understand either.If you aren't breeding they should be neutered. Then they won't mark. I never let my dogs pee inside I've always trained them to go outside. When puppies I give them a penned area so if they can't hold it they go there. I won't give free roam of the whole house until they are potty trained. Always supervised. And then they will have a belly band for accidents. Just something I've always done train them to go outside. Really easy ime. Yorkies are smart. If they don't ime it's because they get aways get away with peeing inside. My previous male would lift it's leg to mark but only outside. Rarely ever had accidents inside the house after he was 2yrs old.Jmo |

Outside is fair game for me too. We are talking about dogs, and fixed or not males and female dogs mark. Some are more obsessive about it than others. My old roommates chi mix girl would mark on our walks. When she ran out of pee, she would start marking with poop! :eek: she was obsessed with marking. |

All of our neutered dogs raise their leg and squat as well. I dont really have a preference for them. They just do what they do. |

Jack will lift his leg only outside and usually when he has to go really bad, otherwise, he will squat outside too. Oh, and when it snows he usually squats - guess the air blowing is a bit too chilly for him to hike that leg up... :yelrotflm |

My Strudie lifts his leg and I just think it is the cutest thing to see this tiny little dog with a bow in his hair lift his leg to pee! He doesn't mark at all in the house though, so I guess thats why I think it is so cute hahaha |
