When will his ears stand?! 2 Attachment(s) Bentley is already 4 months old, I wanted to know when did your babies ears stand up? Is there any tricks I can use ? I heard of taping, also trimming the hairs but I never understood how/ where to trim the hairs? Any other tips? Thanks ladies. :animal-pa Attachment 372720 Attachment 372721 |
I always tell my parents to take their pups to the groomer and have them show them how to shave the ears, or have them done at least every month, some puppies need a bit of help for their ears to stand. erect ears is a very strong trait but not in all yorkies or silkies, some need help... taping with Blue painters tape works too, I seen some good videos on how to on you tube.. hugs, |

You can take him to the groomers and have them shave at least the top 1/3 of the ear to encourage them to stand up. Some yorkies jut have the floppy ears though. You can try massaging them and that may help. |
Bentley is adorable!!! To trim the ears, you want to shave the tip of the ears a third of the way down. You can also massage his ears to help them stand up. But without trimming the ears the weight of the hair will make it difficult. Petsmart will shave the ears for you for just few bucks. |
Thank you ladies! I will definitely go to the groomers, I don't think I would be able to manage trimming them myself since he's so squirmy. I work nights, so I'll schedule a morning appointment that way I can just grab Bentley after work and go straight there ;D |
I was surprised how much the hair weighs down the ears! Ziva is 3 years old and has always held her ears up, until this winter when I let the hair grow long- Her ears started to droop! She has very heavy hair front and back, but when I trimmed them they popped right back up! |
Your Bentley is very cute. It does looks like he does have quite a bit of fur on his ears. I have heard that giving about a teaspoon of cottage cheese every day helps give them some extra calcium that helps the cartilage to form properly. Someone posted a YouTube video on ear taping a couple of months ago so maybe you can find it if you do a search. |

I will for sure head to the groomers maybe sometime this week! Hopefully the trim will help out a little bit. |
My breeder told me that she uses a toilet roll cut into the shape of the ear and tapes it to the floppy ear, if it doesn't respond to cutting the hair on the ears. Kipper's ears stood right up when I shaved his ears. He was excellent for that, but if I even look like I am heading for his feet, WATCH OUT! I am working on earning his trust for that. He is doing somewhat better. |
unfortunately no matter what you do some yorkies ears never stand . my oscars didn't , he is almost 1 year old. i do admit i was a little dissappointed at first but now i just love his little ears the way the are.. |

I know some don't, but until than I want to try everything possible for them to stand. If nothing works, oh well. :) |
thank you. yes , i understand. those tiny little yorkie with their ears standing up straight is so darn cute. |
I know you have been given different ideas and while Georgie's stood up on their own I have to tell you I LOVE FLOPPY EARS!!!! Bentley is sooooo stinkin cute:D |
Personally, think it's so adorable when their ears stay floppy....they look like eternal puppies. I think he looks so darn cute exactly as he is! I was actually a bit bummed when my Pippa's ears all of a sudden went up at 14 weeks...I was hoping for the floppy puppy ears...oh well she is super adorable either way. |
Neither my Rosy or Bojo's ears stand up. The only two from their litters that did not. At first I really wanted them to, and started shaving them then it dawned on me that I didn't take these home for their ears but for their personalities and how much I feel in love with them in such a short time. I stopped trying to put them up ( and with shaving they did start to go up and still do when they are intently listening) My very good friend breed them and I was to pick one...well they both came home with me and have been here ever since, floppy ears and all. Oh their fur, Bojo has the longer silky fur but Rosys is a little more course and not as long. I didn't know there were more than one type of hair for Yorkies. My friend said every so often (one other time hair came out like Rosys) and I saw that dog and she is still the cutest thing. Try to get the ears up if you must but if not I am here to tell you, in the end, all that matters is all the love and devotion they give you. |

It's not like it's a HUGE deal for me, I just want to do everything I can to TRY. In the end if it doesn't work out, he's always gonna steal my heart, and be my boobearrr . :D |
Boobearr. Lol how cute! Good luck trying and I hope you can get them up. I think AKC standards say ear should be up but I'm not planning on doing anything with my papers so it's a moot point for me. I agree the pics around here with ears up are oh so cute. As others have said keep the top Hali of ears clipped or shaved and when I was trying I left the ears alone so the cartilage on the outer side would not bend much. |
My little Tuffey and when I had Sparkey didn't have ears that stood up. I love the way they look it's just part of their personality. I guess like redheads or blondes. Sparkey had one ear that stood up a little but they looked so cute with their long ears I just let the hair grow. |
