another droopy ear thread...help my little Emy has two droopy ears, one is halfway up and the other is flat....I've read all the posts to trim 1/3 of the way, or trim off the hair, but my Emy is very overactive, and I can't get her to hold still long enough to even massage her ears let alone try to clip them with scissors or trimmers or try to get tape on them (that would be an impossible)..how do you get a puppy to hold still long enough to get some of the hair off her droopy ears..should I have my DH hold her head and put her on a counter? I don't want it to be a bad experience though...... |
How old is Emy? I got Zachary at 14 weeks and started bathing/shaving him pretty much from day 1. He hated getting his ears shaved and tried to bite me. At least once a week, even now, we "shave" his ears whether or not it is needed. He also hated being bathed but has gotten used to it, blow drying included. It also made it easier when we took him to the groomer. I have discovered that shaving the whole ear works much better, all the way down to the base. I had the groomer shave 1/3 only and one ear would NOT stay up. So we shaved the whole ear and tada......up it came and it remains up. You have to be so careful when holding them for something like this. They panic and it would be really easy to injure them without meaning to. If she is young, you could probably still get her used to it. Just do a little at a time to get her used to the sound of the shaver and having her ears handled. Good luck!! oh sorry, I forgot to say she just turned 16 weeks on the 23rd. I have been turning on the trimmer to let her here it and putting it up to her (its got a safety cover on it) she just tries to bite it, and jumps back. I'm scared to try to touch her with the safety cover off. She is soooooo squirmy and active chewing everything that comes close to her. I've been trying to brush her everyday, she lets me brush her back, but I can't get to her back leg hair or her stomach. Its frustrating to say the least.:animal-pa |
Hi I have found it to be a lot easier to do any grooming after giving my dogs some good exercise. After playing fetch or after a walk they are more cooperative and willing to sit still. If all else fails, I have one of the kids hold up a spoon with some peanut butter on it while I do what I need to do. :p |
Sounds like she is alpha dog lol. To get them in the grooming habit you have to be consistent and every time they turn over when trying to do tummy just calmly say no we are going to do this and turn them back over. I may take a good amount of time but eventually she will get that you are boss.:p |
