teeth and age? Can you tell the age of a yorkie by their teeth. I was told by my vet my baby may be one month younger then what she really is, five months. Because she has no adult teeth yet. Is that possible? Got my baby from broker/puppy mill, so don't know what her real birthday is at this point! |
If she is five months it seems she would at least have one adult tooth |
This issue comes up a lot. I just replied to a similar post. I learned through vets, show breeders and online research, that Yorkie teeth may take longer to develop than other breeds. Some yorkies maintain their baby teeth through 7 -8 months of age. Some vets use general development/maturity principles to determine that your baby is younger than you were lead to believe. There are unscrupulous 'breeders' who may say a pup is older so that you believe its done growing. HOWEVER, that's not always the case. A yorkie may legitimately be 6-7-8 months of age and still retain baby teeth. Not all vets understand the development of the yorkshire terrier breed. Good luck. Tracey |
Yes, I read your post earlier. No, she is not showing any adult teeth at five months. I'm just trying to figure out how old she really is. |
My current vet told me the same thing. Yoshi was a puppy mill rescue & I was told by the Lab breeders that I adopted him from that he was 20 wks old. During my first vet visit, my vet told me that he was probably 4 months old because he had no adult teeth yet. His grown up teeth started coming in a few days after our vet visit. I'm no Yorkie expert...YT has been a godsend for me! But, I'd like to believe that not all Yorkies develop adult teeth at the exact same time & that perhaps my Yoshi was just a late bloomer. I was really concerned at first because a month is a big difference when you have a new pup & you're trying to be the "perfect mommy". But eventually, I just decided to compromise & basically told myself that he was 4 1/2 months when I adopted him. Now that he's "7 months old", I'm okay with it all. I suppose unless you go through a reputable breeder, you never really know... Good luck! Your baby is a cutie patootie! |
