Hi to everyone :D

My name is Kaydee, I am the proud mommy of a 10month old female Yorkie named Roxy, she is my pride and joy and I am reminded every day that the world really isn't such a bad place when she gives me loads of undeserved kisses and hugs!

I received Roxy from my mother-in-law as a gift, her mommy named Deedee gave birth to a litter of four. She was taken to a breader for some TLC the second time about 3 months ago. Last week Friday she gave birth...

Through out the pregnancy she seemed "bigger" than with her first litter, when she gave birth it was only two pups, one much smaller than the other and she struggled with the first one having resulted in taking her to the vet as to help her give birth. Round about Sunday we started to notice that she didn't eat, she just lay there and when we took her outside for a twinkle she seemed to be "stuck". We took her back to the vet and they found two under developed pups who had died.

I am now very scared to even consider breeding with my princess, if I do decide to breed I will wait until next year September because she will be 2 years old and as far as my understanding, from various websites it would be "safer" to wait until she is 2yrs as she would be fully developed then.

I want to know what the possible reasons could be for Deedee's pregnancy (she was sterilized immediately after the pups were removed) going so horribly wrong? I'd rather not breed my baby than putting her life at risk as I have grown incredibly dependent (I know it sounds very strange) of her.

Any thoughts?

MY THOUGHTS: The VERY first thing you must ask yourself is, "Why am I breeding my dog?". The next thing you must ask yourself is, "Am I willing to risk her life to get a litter of puppies?". The next thing you ask yourself is, "Am I financially able to incur the cost, REGARDLESS OF THE AMOUNT, for emergency care for her, as well as the babies, if things go badly?". If YOU are going to ask your female to risk her life FOR YOU, just for you to have babies, YOU AT THE VERY LEAST, OWE IT TO HER TO BE FINANCIALLY WILLING TO COVER ANY EXPENSE TO SAVE HER LIFE AND THE LIFE OF THE PUPPIES. I CAN PROMISE YOU, THIS CAN EASILY BE WELL IN EXCESS OF $5000.00.
Breeding is a gamble. The odds are increased in YOUR favor, if you have a solid knowledge of the pedigrees and lines of both the dogs being bred, what the lines behind them throw, and any genetic issues that have cropped up in the last 12 generations of either dog. Then, you have to have a complete knowledge of how to whelp a litter, how to recognize WHEN your female gets into trouble, how to raise an orphaned litter, how to care for a female with eclampsia, how to care for a female with mastitis, how to tube feed any babies that are unable to nurse on their own or are pushed away by momma (you must decide if you are going to try to save the baby or let nature take its course and just let the baby die).....these are just a few of the most important things you MUST know before you can, with a good conscience and clear head and honest heart, breed your female.

Welcome. I can't tell you to breed or not to breed your Yorkie. I'm pretty sure this isn't like your average weight dog who just spits out a liter. These little guys can struggle and even die as a result. It's best left up to professionals who do this as a way of life.

Welcome! We all here understand just how attached to our furbabys we can become. As for breeding,I personally would rather just enjoy my sweet girl. I had no problems signing a contract for not breeding her when I purchased her.

I would first think about what health and genetic tests were done on the originally bred female and the stud used?
If you are really serious about breeding, I would search out as much information as possible, test your female, and find a breeder near you to mentor you.

This is a serous decision, and I can tell that you you care about your yorkie, so I'm sure you are doing all you can to inform yourself.

Have a look around here in the breeding section and the YT Library. That may be a good start

I have, after serious deliberation decided that I will not breed with princess Roxy. You're right, all of you. Breeding isn't just something you do, alot of thought, planning and research goes into every single litter.

After all, if your not breeding to improve the breed then you should not breed at all.

It's been hard making up my mind but I think its best left to those individuals who have made Yorkies their life, who understands their specific needs and who are professional and informed.

As for my princess and I...well, we have eachother and she is my everything, I'm not going to put her at risk because I think breeding is "cute" or "exciting". She depends on me for safety, love and security - I'm not going to disappoint her!

It sounds like you have spent some serious time thinking this over. I look forward to hearing of your adventures with your furbaby. Mina goes almost everywhere with me and we always have a great time.

I think you made a wise decision. :). I wish more people had your point of view on breeding. For once, a post on breeding actually made me smile! I think my Rosie is beautiful and think how pretty her babies would have been. But at 5 lb I didn't think the risk was worth it. Therefore, she was fixed before she was one year old. It is a decision I have never regretted. Because you are right, they do depend on us for safety, love, and security. Sounds like you will make Roxy a great momma! :)

Princess Roxy would certainly thank you fore the decision you have made....she can rest assured she is always safest in your care!

A long time ago, I thought that I wanted to breed Yorkies. I fell in love with the breed and thought it would be a good way to make a living. HAHAHA!!! Once I did some reading about breeding (mostly here at YT) I VERY quickly changed my mind about that:laugh: I had NO CLUE what went into breeding properly, and if I was going to do something, I am the type that wants to do it exactly right. I do not have what it takes. Finances, mainly, but also I'm a bit squeamish. Not a good quality in a hands-on breeder:p So any Yorkie I ever own will be neutered or spayed.

I am glad that you did your homework first. A lot of folks show up here with their little girl already pregnant and THEN wanting to be "walked through" what to do:rolleyes:

Welcome to YT! I am so happy you were able to come to a good decision for both you and your little girl. Did the vet not know what caused the mama to have such a difficult time with her litter?

Hi Nanahas3 *Special hallo to everyone else - all of you are such incredible people!!

No, the vet just said that it happens sometimes, she could have been under some kind of stress, she might have been picked up incorrectly but personally I think there are genetic issues either on Deedee's side or from the little male...I can't be certain. I only assume this because there wasn't any testing done on either of them, and to be honest, I would not even be able to tell you who the male's father and mother is let alone 12 generations worth of information on both female and male. I just feel that the main cause for this was serious lack of research and preperation, that's why I was compelled to search the net for all and any information on breeding with Yorkies. Now that I have a better understanding of the breed and the correct procedures, I have realized that I would be the worst person to attempt it, not because I do not have utmost respect and love for my princess and the breed, but because I simply could not devote my entire attention to breeding, considering all risks and financial implications. I sometimes frett that most people who just breed for the sake of a quick buck are very ignorant to not just the dangers, but the cruelty of not being 150% certain about what you are doing and especially, why you are doing it.

But I am very happy to report that Deedee and the two little boys are doing so well, they have so many teets to choose from they are growing fast and fat! :-D and Deedee is her playful self again!

Lol, Roxy stands infront of Deedee's basket and will sit there quietly for hours on end, as if she is guarding the babies. She gets so excited when you pick one up and she gets to sniff (she is never left alone with Deedee and the babies, I am scared something might happen) then she dances around the room barking excitedly! Lord, I love her so much!
