Afraid of the dark? My 11 year old yorkie has always been on the strange/neurotic side and like many dogs is afraid of storms, fireworks loud cars etc but for the past couple of weeks he has been pacing, panting, shaking, scratching at the bedroom door etc when I turn the light or tv off to sleep...it's as if he has suddenly become afraid of the dark. This goes on all night long and is really wearing on me. During the day he is his "normal" quirky self. Has anyone else had any experience with this type of behaviour? Thanks. |

Perhaps he just wants that bedroom door open so he can come and go. |
It could be very possible that his sight is less than perfect at night. I know as mine have gotten older they didn't see as well. I would take him to the Vet and have eyes checked, and just have an all over physical. |
Most dogs see far better than humans in low light but he could be developing an eye condition. But my dogs never liked a dark room or being closed in the bedroom so I started leaving lights on, doors open. |
@yavenay - Well I tried leaving the bedroom door open last night as yorkietalkjilly suggested and that seemed to do the trick, puzzling since I have always kept the bedroom door shut at night, but I do like to keep the bedroom very dark so perhaps it is related to a change in his night vision as TxVicki suggested. Thanks for responding. |
