New Yorkie Mom I am the proud mom (owner just doesn't sound right) of a baby girl 13 weeks old today. She was 5 oz at birth and at the vet today she weighs 3.5 lbs. Her mom and dad are only 5 to 6 pounds adult weight so I don't know if this means she will be much bigger than them or I've let her eat too much. I work 3 twelve hour shifts a week so I've kept dry food available all day so as not to risk hypoglycemia and she has grown and thrived in the 5 weeks I've had her. I think I worry too much! She was all I could think about when I first went to work and had to keep her in such a confined space in the little bathroom. Now she has the whole kitchen as we've put up a large gate to keep her safe (had to use chicken wire on the gate as we found she could squeeze right through the bars.) She is the sweetest dog and isn't afraid of anything or anyone. My sister's condo burned down last week so she is staying with me and brought her 60 pound German Shepard mix. Penelope runs right up to her and jumping trying to lick her face as the big dog gives warning barks. We keep them separated at all times! Thank you for letting me introduce myself and Penelope. Hello and welcome. These little ones do seem to be fearless don't they? That can be a scary thing at times because they do not realize the dangers they can get into. You really can't overfeed a puppy that age. Puppies should be able to eat as needed especially when you are gone for quite a while. It's really hard to say how big she will get. Occasionally small dogs will throw a puppy that is larger than themselves. She may have had a growth spurt or she may just be a larger dog. Did you actually see both parents? |
I have a 5 year old Yorkie Maltese mixed that just had her first puppy on Monday. The father is a purebred Yorkie but he is just 1 yr old. The mom weighs about 7 1/2 lbs and the Father weighs just over 5 lbs. The puppy looks great. I am nw here and have 2 Yorkie Maltese mixed girls and the 1 Yorkey male. |
I saw both parents and have become friends with the breeder as she works in the ER with me. The parents both are around 5-6 pounds. I figured I would let her eat as she needs to and I won't worry about it if she ends up larger than expected as long as she doesn't end up overweight with that set of health issues. I can't wait until I can take her for walks after her last set of vaccines + a week. In a month it should be safe to take her outside and get more active. I sure need to be! :) |

Welcome to YorkieTalk! Its very rare for a puppy to be over weight and if your vet didn't say anything I'm sure your doing fine. |
Congratulations on your new baby! Please watch her around the shepherd...she is still a baby and she desplays a "HAS NO FEAR" bumper sticker on her butt! She will try to play with that big dog and may end up unintentionally hurt buy a huge heavy paw or a grasp in jaws that could be a little too tightly shut!! You are doing the right thing by free feeding that little baby....calories ingested are the fuel for the energy she is busting loose with!! |

Congrats...i wouldn't worry. I would rather have an eater than a finicky dog. You can always cut back a little. If she's eating I wouldn't worry about Hypoglycemia |
