Hello everyone Hi, I have just found this forum and am still finding my way around. I have just had Molly, by beautiful 5 year old Yorkie from a rescue center but I am having a few problems that I could do with advise please!!! She will only eat human food, tomotoes, carrotts, cucumber, apples and melon to name but a few. I have tried mixing chicken and one of the above with dog food but she just picks it out and leaves the rest. Any suggestions? Also can she can be a bit grumpy when being groomed and freally needs a bath but I'm worried I will scare her and make her a bit aggressive, again, any suggestions. Hi and welcome to Yorkietalk! Congrats on your new girl Molly. Do you know what Molly was eating before? I don't know if you are able to find that out or not. You could try getting different samples of foods and see if there are any she likes. Also another option would be to home cook for her. My girls love home cooking. If Molly is getting grumpy when groomed, could it be that she is matted? Matting hurts to be brushed out :( and is generally uncomfortable on the skin. I would get a good detangling spray and/ or deep conditioner and try to work through the knots before giving her a good bath. Take it slowly and she should do alright. |

She is a vegatarian? Does she like any meat? It would be nice to know what the rescue was feeding her at least. How long is her fur? If it is matted it may take some delicate work trying to get it fixed. Do you have a good metal grooming comb to use on her? They sell spray conditioning products that may help getting tangles out and just making it easier to comb in general. It's not good to try to comb through dry tangled hair anyway. How long have you had her? Taking her to a groomer might be a good idea IF you know a good one. There are a lot of people out there that really know very little about grooming a Yorkie and yet call themselves "groomers." If you want to bathe her yourself wait until you have had her a couple of weeks if you can. A dog that has just been placed in a new home is going through a lot of anxiety and stress. Be patient with her and take it a day at a time. |

Take it slow when combing her out and praise her, it takes time for them to get used to being groomed, Like the other poster said check for matts, Because they pull when combing them. If you have a magic bullet I would grind her kibble with her food's she does like and make it a little moist for her. When you bath her try to make it a happy moment by scratching her back and around her ear's, All yorkies seem to like being rubbed. She will adjust in time. Update!!! Molly loved her bath. She just sat in the water and let me wash her, she wasn't even bothered with her ball (had been advised to give her a toy in the bath). Not too keen on the hair dryer though so letting her dry naturally. More success, she has eaten dog food on it's own without any human food, so a small dish full but it's a start. Thanks to you all for the advice |

Thanks :aimeeyork I have given her winalot tonight, have tried her with Butchers and Ceasar but she would not eat it. Tried winalot and although she has only eaten a small amount she ate it without human food !!! Not quite sure how much a yorkie should eat in a day, any advice? |
You might want to check the ingredient list on the food. If there is more grain than meat it might not be too great of a food. Also if there are a lot of ingredients that you cannot identify that is also a red flag. The dog food advisor is a good site to get info on dog foods. Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor Another thing to consider is what kind of shape her teeth are in. Yorkies have a tendency to have bad teeth but feeding poor quality food can make matters worse much faster. You may be able to get a look at them but it is best to have a vet check them and possibly clean them. It's good to hear you two are bonding so well and that the bath went well. |
