how do you trim the rear area??
 

I always have to wipe Emy's butt after she goes pooh, today after she went, she had some stuck to her hair, and it smelled so bad, so I turned on our outside hose on the shower nozzle, and lifted her butt up and sprayed it. She didn't like it very much, but there was no way I was going to wipe that off with a wet wipe inside. I need to trim away the hair that the pooh is sticking to, but I don't want to buzz her or anything, just trim with little scissors as she is a wiggler, and I'll have to get DH to hold her while I attempt to cut some of the hair from around you-know-where. I love her, she always waits for me to wipe her butt after she poohs, and doesn't move while I'm wiping, she probably knows what I'm doing and she doesn't want to smell it either!!:animal-pa

I always tried to trim with scissors but now that I have two furry butts to look after I got brave and I buzz them-I permanently"borrowed" my husbands beard trimmer, he never used it anyway!

Please don't use a outside hose on your yorkie the water is way to cold for them.

Using a hose on a little dog is not an acceptable way of dealing with the situation. She should not be having such loose stools that stick to her as a regular thing. It can happen occasionally but should not be a regular occurrence. If it is so bad that you felt you needed to hose her off then you have something more serious going on. I do not understand why you would not bathe her in your bath tub or the sink. You can always clean the tub or sink when you are done.
Your groomer should be more than happy to show you how to trim her butt the first time if you do not feel you are capable of doing it properly yourself.

The best way to do sanitary trim is to use a clipper. They have tiny ones you can use for their private areas & their paws. If she wiggles a lot, I wouldn't use a scissor unless it has a blunt end.

Please wash her indoors in a sink...you can always wear a glove if it grosses you out.;) You don't want to scare her w/the garden hose & cold water while you're washing her, she'll wiggle more & make grooming time just so much more difficult.

I had to trim Harry's bottom yesterday funnily enough....it was more the straggly bits of his tail that he wasn't lifting high enough (what a subject...:D).

I always use those round ended baby scissors, and because I do it every couple of weeks (not because he's in a mess, but so that he DOESN'T get in a mess :)) he's completely used to it. He actually lifts his tail up for me now! Sally + Harry x

okay, first of all, it was 100 degrees yesterday and the water coming out of the hose that was laying outside was HOT, I ran it until it was lukewarm and put the nozzle on the gentle spray, just till I got inside the house, I would never run COLD water on my puppy, duh, and no she doesn't have anything serious going on she just had some pooh that stuck to her rear end hair, that made me decide to trim that area, but I don't think she would stand for a moustache trimmer coming close to her rearend, so I'll just use little scissors with the rounded end on it....and she wasn't freaked out or anything like that, I gently rinsed the hair, then I took her inside and finished up. It was just that we were outside anyway while she was doing her business, and had a little straggler that didn't fall off. Thats all.

I understand the heat - we have a heatwave in the northeast as well!:)

My Lucy had some poo snagged on her bum this a.m. too. I put her in the sink & rinsed it out. Then I took a little Yorkie shampoo and washed that area. Finally, I took my short, round tip scissors (that are really for around her feet and pads) and trimmed a little bit.

I'm going back with the clippers tonight. I've never done it, but I'll look for some instructional videos on Youtube. Can anybody tell me which comb attachment I should use? I have a Wahl ARCO clipper - I think a user CD came with it too.

Any insight would be helpful!!:p

I have used small, very sharp scissors, and an Oster Finisher Trimmer, (not together...lol) to trim that 'behind us' area. I only use scissors to trim the 'other' personal areas on Brody and Mia, though. Whatever is used, it should be sharp, cut clean quickly, and never pull...ouch. Round ends are better than pointy ends, especially if they tend to wiggle.

If using a really inexpensive trimmer, test first...some are not all that sharp and/or efficient. You could probably use one of those little 'bikini' trimmers advertisers are re-purposing as a beard/moustache trimmer for the guys...the ones with the tiny blades that stick out sideways from what otherwise looks similar to an electric toothbrush. Again, test to make sure it cuts quick and clean and doesn't pull.

My 2-year-olds aren't all that freaked out about trimmings after having it done for over a year at my house, but they sometimes don't want it done...err...now, so I try again if they object. :p Also, they have 'objected' to the sound certain trimmers make...which is why those are not mentioned by name. lol

You can trim about a 1" diameter 'spot' but you can also take the clippers and buzz from just under the tail straight down and just under, avoiding the "sensitive" stuff below. This gives a nice 'track' for the "ick" to fall through, hopefully without sticking to anything important...and doesn't look bad at all from behind. :p

However, it is certainly preferable to me to trim to AVOID a mess they might take care of 'on their own'...ugggghhh...after which, they just MAY want to do kissy face with me...

If you're using a clipper w/detachable blades, the #10 blade is for sanitary trims...don't use comb attachments for sanitary trims. I have the Wahl ARCO in pink, love it! You can use the shortest setting or 2nd shortest, I forget the #.

Someone suggested the WAHL Peanut that I got at Sally's. Use it lightly on her bottom and on the bottom of her feet. It is really small

I'm in Texas and it gets over 100 degrees almost daily so I understand that it's not cold water coming out of the hose. :) Jaxson is a wiggler so I just got my buzzers put the shortest guard and carefully trimmed around his private areas! My husband was a more worried about it then Jaxson lol. Good luck & keep cool!! :)
