Yorkie Shedding? Hi, I have a 3month old male yorkie who is a fluff ball to say the least and I noticed when I was holding him earlier while wearing a white t-shirt that he was shedding & my only question is could it be he's losing his puppy fluff or is this not normal? He is eating well, drinking plenty of water, & just a smart, happy puppy but just wanted to get y'alls input if you have any. Thanks in advance! :) |
How much hair is he losing? Mine have never shed at all, except for the hair in the brush when they are being groomed. Maybe someone more experienced can give more insight. |
There is hair in his brush after I groom him but never shedding! He's not losing patches or anything like that but he's losing/shedding enough for me to now notice it on my shirt & in his bed...I'm wondering if its just puppy fluff cause he is really really fluffy?? He goes to the vet for his last round of puppy shots on the 25th. |
Has he been checked for worms, etc.? |

I'm wondering, if it's mega-hot there, whether that has anything to do with it? Extreme conditions? Sally + Harry x |
Three of my girls were adopted at 13 to 15 weeks and one was 5 months. The youngest ones shed puppy fuzz like crazy till it was gone and they had their adult coat. Just make sure you give him Omega fatty acids. I buy the NOW brand Omega 3, 6, 9 gel caps and give a few drops in their food. (depending on their weight) Giving a good oil is so important, especially if they are eating kibble. Two of my girls are allergic to this and fish. Another thing to help his baby coat is to use a gentle shampoo that you can dilute way down, then make sure you rinse and rinse, then use a good conditioner. (do a light shampoo once a week to keep dirt, dust and such out of his coat, but not to dry the skin). Brush him out at least once a day. You can even use vegetable glycerine (heated) and give him a nice hot oil treatment after the bath, especially in the winter when their coat dries out from heating the house so much. I find a humidifier is very helpful for their coat, my skin hair and my Zada who has collapsed trachea. |
Thank You! He's been checked out by a vet & we just dropped off a fecal sample that the vet on post requires two weeks ago & he said that Jaxson was healthy no signs of anything or any problems. :) He is very fluffy as I have stated before & my hubby & I decided instead of taking him to the groomer we'd try grooming him ourselves that way he is more comfortable, not around other barking/whining dogs, & he can get treats, cuddled, and put right in his bed with his toys & blanket afterwords! We decided to go ahead and groom him today vs. next week so we did it for the first time today & he wiggled, squirmed, cried but finally after 3 treats and taking plenty of little breaks we got him groomed! He looks a little silly it being our first times but he's our pup and we'll get better at it. I wash him once a week because he gets dirty out in the backyard exploring(supervised of course) and we brush him daily. I'm just happy we got him trimmed up cause we're in Texas & it gets over 100 daily here so goofy looking or not he'll be nice & cool outside! |
Taz started shedding more than normal but I think it's because the hot weather in Texas as been at an all time high. I keep him hydrated and keep him in doors until the afternoon when the sun goes down. As long as he's hydrated and eating a balanced diet, it could just be the puppy fuzz shedding. |
I've only had one Yorkie so I am no expert but Gracie has never shed at all. Her fur just kept getting longer. Occasionally if I had a tangle in her hair I might get some hair in the comb but she never shed on my clothing. Not as a puppy and not as an adult. Is your puppy a pure bred Yorkie? As I understand it Yorkies grow coats that are kind of like human hair that just keep growing with no undercoat. There is such a thing as a cotton coat but I have never had to deal with one of those. Puppy coats do not usually start to change until they are around 8 to 10 months of age. |

Yes he is a full blooded AKC registered Yorkie. :) He is no longer shedding & he gets a good brushing daily! I think it just may have had to do with the heat & some puppy fluff decided to come out. He's a healthy, happy little boy. :animal-pa |
Also his parents both have silky long beautiful hair. :) |
Ziva has a silky, rather wavey, abundant fine coat, I am careful to comb her every day because she leaves a little fluff in the comb. She would leave fine hairs on our clothes when she was a puppy. Abby never has a hair fall out, her hair is silky, thinner and perfectly straight. |
