Cotton or silky ? :aimeeyorkMy lil man has a thick coat and since it has grown out some, it gets mats very easy. I comb him every night. I was told by a breeder that he has a silky coat, but I'm not so sure about that. It mats so easily. Any advice on how to care for this type of coat? Oh yes, the coat on his back half tends to curl. |
Sounds like the qualities of cottony what texture does it have to the touch? Does it fall flat when brushed up or does it fluff? What color eye shine does your furkid have? |
How old is he? Callie's puppy coat was terrible with matting but after she became in adult her hair does not get mats at all and its pretty darn thick but I do keep it in a puppy cut but even when it grows out a bit it never tangles. |
Zachary's hair was straight and parted in the middle on his back when we got him at 14 weeks of age. He is now 5 months old. When we had him groomed a couple of weeks ago, we got his fur cut quite short because of matting. NOW his fur is coming in curly and cottony!! It is totally different than it was before. I was told that sometimes the adult fur WILL come in different than the puppy fur and I believe that. It is short so it doesn't tangle so I don't know if I will have the same problem as I did before if it gets longer. It will probably be kept short but I am not sure about that. Lucy still has her puppy coat. It's starting to grow out (Her black is changing to blue down the back.) I've had some difficulty with matting on her legs. I was told (here:)) that the adult coat is different from the puppy coat. Maybe you just have to wait it out. Also, you may have an outlier from your breeder's line. Even if most of the yorkies are silky textured, your puppy may be the one that's not. It's a wait an see. Good luck. Tracey |
I have brothers from the same liter, one has a cotton coat and the other a silky coat. And it's true, my cotton coats eyes shine red, while my silky coated boy shines green. I struggled with my cotton coated boy for a LONG time! He HATES the brush, can't blame him, he's always matted. I just get him groomed really short now, even shorter than a puppy cut sometimes and he goes every 3 months (well they both do) and thats about all I can do for him. He WILL not let me brush and I used to try to shave him myself, but he won't tolerate it any longer at all. My 7 lb 4 legged pup turns into a 90lb 18 legged beast when I try to brush him or clip him! |

yorkie hair/coats Samson's hair is the silky...tangles easily. He's 5 months old and it's thin and lies flat when I comb him. He got groomed for the first time today and she said he did great. She cut all the black out...left him with the silvery light coat that was growing in. So cute!! His face and legs are lighter blonde with some of the brown mixed in. But now his body is silvery. My groomer knows yorkies well, and said Sammy might change colors again a couple of times before he gets his final colors. My husband calls him a camelion (sp?). I also learned that the thin coat will thicken up 2 to 3 times the thickness it is starting out with. But the silky trait will be there... it will tend to tangle easily. I've gotten him used to brushing and combing and he is tolerating it much better, but I have to keep it up daily or he begins to fight it because the tangles begin to show up some. Especially under his pits and down his legs. Poor thing. |
I have two girls, each with different hair. Ally has silky that tangles easy and Tia has cotton, which matts uncontrollably. I love the long hair on both of them, but had to cut Tia's hair short, due to her matting. It was just getting so bad for her. I also started putting my SuperSkinny on their hair (similar to Pet Silk...I think) and that has helped a great deal. They get a bath once a week and I put it on their wet hair just before I dry them. They look a little oily the first day, but super silky the rest of the week. Tangles and matts comb right out. I love it and it helps my DIVAs with their daily combing. |
If the hair appears silky but tangles easily, it's probably modified = hair that's mixed w/silky & cottony hair. Another way to tell besides the obvious eye shine in pics is that silky reflects shine & cottony does not. |
