haircoat help Hi everyone . I need advice on a couple things Gigi is my first yorkie as ive only had pits in the past., im seeing all the cute yorkies here and wondering how to get her coat to look like this. Meaning silky, long and with bows. I take her every 2 weeks to the groomer and every time they put a bow she pulls it out right away.? also, i think she has a more cottony coat but does that grow out when shes older? Any advice will help. I love her and think shes beautiful regardless but wishes her coat looked a little girlier. |
How old is your puppy? Puppy hair can be a lot different then adult hair. |
Shes about 8 months now. Dont know exact age. 7 or 8. |
Would like to see pictures. Yorkies have different fur. Some are much more thick and others are more thin and silky. |
I think i put some pics in my profile somewhere lol. Still tryin to figure out how to work this thing. :D |
You have to be persistent with the bows and keep putting them back. Eventually they will see mama is going to win the battle lol.:p Also to put the pictures up they have to be smaller you can put them in your paint and resize them then upload them. |
The bow thing is all about training. It has to be done daily and sometimes more than daily. Do you use grooming bands to put it in or have you only let the groomer do it? If your dog has a cotton coat you are going to need to use a really good quality shampoo and conditioner and probably a conditioning spray for between baths. Most Yorkies with long fur need a weekly bath and daily combing. If you comb her daily with a good metal grooming comb it should be fairly easy to keep her looking good. A small 4" comb works better for the face and topknot. After you get the grooming bands in give her a treat and then try to distract her from trying to take the topknot out. A game of fetch use to work for Gracie. If it is in loosely enough she should forget it is there. You don't need to to anything fancy at first. Just get it in there and get her accustomed to wearing it. |
My baby has been wearing something in her hair for a couple months. Sometimes she still decides to take it out, but when she does I just tell her we have to fix her hair and put it right back in. The secret is consistency. I do take it out before we go to bed, I know I wouldn't want anything in my hair at night. That means it is a daily ritual for us. She is getting much better at sitting still while I fix her hair. And she always gets a treat afterwards. |
Just wanted to say hello, and looking forward to learning a lot from all yorkie owners |
Hi! I'm a new yorkie owner too. I think it takes practice to be able to fix your baby up and get her used to it! I got my baby at five months. You may have to start bathing your yorkie. Then as part of the weekly grooming process, you start putting a top knot in. I'm certainly no expert. My top knots are rather clumsy and small. I do it, however, so that my Lucy gets used to me handling her. You need some very basic products and the right bands. Some people use the bands that are in braces. There are all sorts of grooming tips here. You can find threads on everything from bathing to brushing to removing mats to cleaning ears and teeth and more! You have to start doing it yourself though. Your baby won't remain all primped between grooming visits. And if you do it yourself, you'll require fewer trips to the groomer!:p Good luck. Tracey |
Thanx for the advice guys. Well yes the groomer does it. To be honest i havent yet given it my all BUTTTT, I did purchase a detangling spray and some small glittery bands for her tonight from target. Theyre almost as small as the ones for braces so ima try em out tomorrow. Also i just gave her a bath tonight so she will b fresh tomorrow. i dont care if she has it everyday but sometimes when i take her out i want her lookin good lol. |
The last time she went to the groomers they cut her down pretty short so now i see she has wavy hair.??? is that common? |
I think wavy would indicate she has a cotton coat. She is not going to let you do a bow occasionally without a lot of trouble. It is daily training that works. If you don't want to go through that you might try these: Hello Kitty Snap N Go Dog Hair Bows Set of 2 by valygal on Etsy You only need a small amount of hair to snap the bow over. It is good for an occasional dress up day but you would need to keep her hair short around her eyes so she can see. |
