Will shelters accept food samples? I have a big grocery bag full of dog food samples (Artemis, Canidae, California Natural, EVO, etc) that I got from different stores and that companies have sent me to try. I've settled on a food for Toki and we're definitely not going to get through these bags so I'm not sure what to do with them... even though I didn't pay for these samples, I don't want to just throw them out. I'm not really sure how shelters handle feeding the dogs there...I imagine they would ideally like to not be switching foods constantly (probably impossible since they depend largely on donations from many sources). These samples are such a mish mash and aren't even going to be enough for a meal for any dog over 15 pounds. Do your local shelters accept samples or just full-sized, unopened bags and cans? |
One of the shelters in our area takes food donations all the time. They have never asked for a specific brand. It does seem like it would be difficult on the dogs to be switching them all the time. Some of the bigger dogs are more able to deal with changes. It would not hurt to call and ask them. |
my local shelter accepts any brand or size bag of food. |
I would think they would take them. Doesn't hurt to ask. :) |
Most shelters accept all foods. with all the animals they have I'm sure they will be grateful for ANYTHING they get...I donated adult and puppy kibble to our shelter...when I brought it in the girl looked at me and said...well...we can use the adult but we don't get puppies in here very often...I thought that was rude! it's food for crying out loud! so what if it's puppy food...they could still have used it for the adults...it was FREE! I wanted to throw the bag at her! |
Mine takes food as long as it hasn't been opened. I have donated food to the Shelter that is right up the road from me. |
I would think they would take them, as a shelter depending on any and all donations |
I just dropped off the samples and a 4 lb bag of Fromm's Salmon Tunalini. My shelter gladly accepted them! My understanding was that the shelter is in partnership with Hill's Science Diet so all of the dogs in the shelter eat that but the shelter supplies their foster homes with the donated foods. I'm just glad that this food is going to get used! |

Excellent:) The shelter here once accepted an opened bag of kibbles from me. It was at one of their adoption drives at Petco. Not sure if they used it or not, since it had been opened and a tiny amount used, (mine wouldn't eat it)but I was also glad to not throw it away and waste it;) |

Ours accepts any food that is unopened without question. I also found out they accept opened shampoo and conditioner. I had tons of shampoo and conditioner that for one reason or another didn't like and didn't know what to do with. The shelter gladly accepted the opened bottles of shampoo and conditioner. It made my happy to think a shelter dog was getting pampered with a bath from the shampoo I didn't want and was just sitting on the shelf. |
