Kennels
 
Do y'all leave your yorkies in a small kennel or a big one where they have room to run around some? I have a huge one from when our bigger dog was a puppy, but he doesn't use it any more. So, we were letting Ryder stay in it while we were gone, but I'm so tired of cleaning up after him. Would you recommend a smaller kennel or what should I do to prevent him from going in the kennel?

the kennel should only be big enough for them to turn around and lay down in. Usually dogs won't pee and poop where they sleep..MO...get smaller crate. Are you leaving him in the crate all day?

Smaller is best til housebroken. Lots of space is an earned privilege.

Yes, we leave him in there all day. However, I am grateful enough to work close to home, so I come home on my lunch break and let my dogs out.

The kennel Ryder is in now is huge. I'm able to fit a small bed and his food/water bowls and he still has a little room to spare. I also have a smaller crate that I put him in when we go some where. I debated on trying that for awhile and seeing how he does. He's FINALLY getting some what better at house training. But, he's still having some accidents. Which I understand, but the kennel is a big issue.

Yorkies need to go outside as puppies every 2-3 hrs. They are not made to be crated all day. Mine even as adults are rarely left for more than 3-4 hours.

You may want to look into pee pads.

A friend of mine that has chihuahuas has the same set up. She basically uses an extra large crate like most would a playpen. She has a bed area, pee pad area and food/water/toys in there. Her little ones are MAJOR climbers, so a playpen was too dangerous to use. It works perfect for her.

I wouldn't be leaving a puppy in a crate all day long...My suggestion would be to get an x pen for him. It's got more room for him then a crate. When we got Bentley (3rd yorkie!) he was 5 months old and very small...We kept him in an x pen when we were at work during the day. I would put toys, food, water and a pee pad in there for him. he had plenty of room to play and do his thing in there. His crate is only used at night when it was time for bed. I understand you have a large crate for him but, he is still limited to "space" and when he gets old enough to not spend his days confined he will probably still use his crate as his bathroom...as this is what he is doing now.

I have to work, so unfortunatily, I'm not able to take him out as often. My other dog does just fine. I believe it's just a matter of training.

Pee pads work when we're home. He's finally started using them. However, if I leave them in the crate, he tears them up. So, I'm not spending all that money on pee pads for him to tear them up.

I used a play plen at first, but Ryder got smart and figured out how to get out as well. Lol. So, then we used the crate. It worked out really well. I hate to leave him without water/food. But, I think I may have to convert to a smaller kennel for now untill he's mostly house trained.

use washable pee pads...I believe you can get them at the pharmacy or...if you know someone that works in a hospital maybe they could get you a couple...that's where I got mine. Have you thought about maybe blocking him in like your bathroom or kitchen so he has more room to roam?

I'm not leaving him out while we aren't home. He likes to chew, and he'll chew on baseboards. They have washable pads at WalMart, I believe. I actually forgot about that until you meantioned it. I may go get some. I think I'm gonna go with the smaller kennel for while we aren't home, that's what everyone I've talked to has suggested.

I have a little houdini also but thankfully I am lucky enough to be home with my babies. Although when we do have to leave them to run errands I do crate Laddy because he has separation anxiety and will jump at the door handle from the time I close the door until I return home. Your little one definately needs to have food and water available though especially in this heat.

Yeah, we are having some EXTREME heat this year! My baby isn't outside except to use the bathroom. :) I think my Ryder has seperation anxiety as well. He'll only tear stuff up when we aren't home or if we aren't paying attention to him. Lol.

I'm training my pup to use a kennel when nobody is home. But I will use a wee pad in the corner. washable cheap and hard to chew. They will need to go. But if in the same spot it will be easier to clean up. This and house training it still takes ~2 yrs before they won't go in the house. Well at least for a short period of time. I will pen mine because the danger of chewing everything up it worst imo.

I know people have to work. I have a full time job myself as a nurse. Mine have never used a wee-wee pad.


Have you tried the reusable human type of incontinence pads- A bit harder to destroy and more Eco- friendly.
