new to yorkie talk Im sam i am new to yorkie talk. i have been wanting a yorkie but I'm not sure if its the right dog for me. I won't be home from 8 am-3 pm every day except weekends. I have a boykin spaniel, but won't a yorkie and suggestions! Thanks, Sam |
Hi Sam Only you would know the answer to that question, but I do know that many yorkie owners work and have furbabies. You would just have to read up extensively on the yorkie personality and honestly decide if this is a good match for you and your family. I can tell you they are loving and beautiful and amazing dogs BUT they can be difficult to potty train, they really need ALOT of human contact, can be expensive (vet bills, dentals etc). Just do as much research as you can and read the stories on here from people who live with this type of dog, that would be my advice.. Best of luck to you:) |
Will someone be available to let your pup out when you arent home. Yorkies are a very special breed and they love to be with their people. If you decide on a yorkie, be very selective as to whom your breeder will be, dont fall for the 'teacup' line as there is no such thing. Many of us here have bought from byb, inadvertedly puppymills, and pet stores, and many know the heartache of losing/caring for the pups that come from these places. Buyer beware! Buy your breeder first, and ask questions. A yorkie should never leave its mother before 12wks of age...they are generally small(some are Bigger) and need mother to teach them the necessary social skills they will need, to adjust to a new home/. A well socialized, healthy yorkie is truly a joy to own. They are truly one of the most unique, funny, inquisitive, smart, loyal breeds i have had the pleasure of being with. They are the best! You will find wonderful and knowledgeabe ppl here, who would be glad to share their experiences with you. Welcome to YT |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! Is there any way you can come home during lunch to let your pup out? |
Yes i should be able to let him out around 1. What did you do to potty train your puppy. |

If you can't take the puppy out during the day or can't find anyone that can help you out, you can consider having a petsitter come to the house once a day to let the puppy out and spend a few minutes with him/her. Or another option is doggie day care. They are pretty popular nowadays for working pet parents. You might check into these options, at least for a little while until the pup gets a little bit older. |
Be sure to get a large enough Yorkie that can hold its own & not be injured by your other dog's playing roughly with it when your back is turned or you step out of the room. New Yorkie owners sometimes don't know just how fragile the typical Yorkie can be. They also need their teeth brushed daily & yearly(if not more frequent) cleanings under anesthesia, which can cost upwards of $500.00 plus. The smaller the Yorkie, sometimes the worse the dental situation and a tooth can abscess, requiring medication and then surgery. Don't mean to be a downer but just informing you of some of the realities you could face owning a Yorkie. It is a wonderful breed but it really takes a special type of owner to have and enjoy them sometimes. |
Hello, I am new here too, also new to yorkies. I just got a new baby yesterday and she seems to be a great match for us. She is attached to me pretty well and follows me everywhere. Good luck! |
