Puppy Questions! :) Jaxson just turned 12 weeks & is 100% house trained. :D However I have a couple questions & I know this is just the right place to get some great answers & advice! Jaxson went to the vet two days ago & everything checked out just great! They weighed him & he ended up weighing more then I thought he would! 3.2lbs! Question that I have is is that too high for his age? Also is there any way to kinda figure out how much he should be fully grown? I know all pups varies and usually goes off of the parents weight! I know the Momma was 7lbs & the Dad was almost 8lbs. Also I know losing teeth is common among Yorkies & was gonna go to pick up somethings so I can brush his teeth on a regular basis any tips on this & product recommendations. Thank you in advance!! |
mini yorkies when do they stop growing what age:animal-pa |
I'm not 100% sure when they fully stop growing but i'd think 12 months? |

hi , i am glad jaxson is doing well. Yorkies normally are fully grown in height by 6 -7 months and in weight by 9-12 months.. My boy oscar was 4 pounds @ 12 weeks now @ 10 months he is 7 1/2 pounds. He stopped growing in height about 7 months and his weight gain really slowed around the same time... |
Jaxson is sooo cute -- and I loooveee his name (though, I may be biased ;)) My Jackson is a big boy. He weighed in at 6lbs at his 12 week appt and he's now an athletic 16lbs at 3.5yrs old. :) His parents were 8lbs and 9lbs (according to her, but I only saw the mother, not a good breeder). He stayed right at 12lbs from 6 months until a little over a year and then I guess filled out 16lbs. But he's skinny and muscular, and not out of shape, so I guess it was just him filling out. |
Congrats on the potty training! :D They say you can estimate adult weight by doubling the 12 week weight and adding or subtracting a pound. This is still an estimate, but it's fairly accurate. I would say that he'd be around 6.4 pounds. I would buy the more expensive Petrodex toothpaste, it really does help reduce tartar and plaque and most dogs love the poultry flavor. You use so little, it last a long time! Right now, you just want him to get acquainted with the brushing action. |

Oh wow okay thank you so much & will look into that toothpaste! He doesn't like having his mouth messed with but we'll get him there!! Thanks again!! :) |
Oh yeah and in regards to teeth brushing... I agree, get him started early!! I wish I had, as it took some re-training on my part, but now he's fine with it. I use CET toothpaste. It was the only one recommended by the veterinary dentist where he had to have mouth surgery. He likes the beef flavor! |
I would not worry about a puppies weight especially at 12 weeks they are growing and grow up to a year. Also not all yorkies are the same weight of there parents. A vet is a good person to talk to about his weight if you are worried. Your not really going to 100 percent know his weight until he is fully grown. I would start getting him used to a tooth brush asap I like and use CET tooth paste and I get mine at amazon. |
Congrats on the success with potty training! I would talk to your vet to find out if he's overweight, but 3.2 pounds doesn't sound huge for a 12 week old. They usually say to double the 12 week weight, but not all pups follow that pattern. |
Thanks! :) Thank you all for the advice/tips! This afternoon I went to Petco & got a soft toothbrush & toothpaste kit that was a little on the costly side but he's worth it if it means he'll have a healthy set of teeth later in life! :animal36 Also I'm not worried about him being a butterball or anything if my baby is hungry he gets to eat & he's not over fed but I have kibble down because that's what the vet had instructed me to do with him being a small puppy and all! The vet told me he is healthy as can be & very happy. :) :D |
