how dangerous are pee pads? ok..so ive been reading other posts on how yorkies have gotton so sick from eating their pee pads..i monitor bruno in his play pen and sometimes he does chew and likes to tear them up but i say a loud "no" and he stops...now im nervous, but i like the convenience of pee pads..how much does a 3lbs yorkie have to digest to get sick?...i have left him alone so far for 3 hours and he has not chewed on them....what do you guys think???? |
I have a pee pad shredder also - I decided to go with the washable pee pads. Love them!:) |
IMO...I don't have my pup yet. Never used pee pads before. But if you dog is already a shredder of them it only takes once to swallow and get sick. I'm going to out door train my dog. Theres someone home to let the pup out when I'm at work. But I know there gonna be times when he will be left alone. I'm going to set up a pen with a wee pad in the corner for accidents. Can't expect them to hold for more than hrs when they are a pup. I will buy 5 from the Hospital supply. Very inexpensive the $4. And buy washing them I keep the pads out of the landfill. JMO |
The first day I had Gracie she did play with the pee pads and I could see it was going to be a problem. I went to Walmart and bought the frame that they use to sell. I think it was made by Out. Anyway, it is very secure and the puppy cannot move the pee pad once it is locked into the frame. It put and end to the problem quickly. I would advise anyone with a new puppy to start out training with a good secure frame for the pee pad. I noticed that our Walmart has switched brands of frame and pee pad and the new kind is not nearly as secure. They do sell much the same frame on Amazon. |
My new baby Trinket puts all her toys in her bed. Yesterday she put her pee pad in there too. lol We started taping down the corners and she doesn`t bother it anymore. |
I have a pee pad holder frame also, but my little Emy still got her little teeth in the center of that pee pad and pulled up pieces off, I caught her everytime and scolded her but she just thinks I'm playing with her and barks at me. She doesn't go on her pee pads anyway, she plays with her toys on them, thinks its a bed or something...I'm going to look into getting maybe one of those Go Spot circular 24" potties, or one of those RascalDoglitter pottys....when I take her outside on her harness, she potties in the grass, but first thing in the morning when its still dark, I'm not going outside with her, cause I can't see her to see whats she's doing and I'm afraid of racoons outside. My Emy is a chewing terror, everything goes in her mouth to chew, luckily I'm home with her all the time and I watch her like a hawk, but I hope she grows out of this stage soon. She's 13 weeks now. |
If you use the hospital supply pads or the washable pads you might want to buy a liquid house breaking aid to put on them. The puppy can smell it and it attracts them to pee on the pad. Some of the commercial disposable pee pads already have the pads treated with the scent. Some of them must not have a very good scent on them because they do not attract the puppy. A good one really does the job though. Dogs are very scent motivated and love to pee where they smell that particular scent. Thankfully, humans cannot smell it. |
Eating pee pads is potentially very dangerous. Max had me in tears several times when he was a pup because I was so worried about him shredding and eating the pads. He outgrew the naughty habit. You can use washable pads and avoid the problem altogether. |
Issy shreds everything! Pee pads, toys, dog bed, and go forbid if she gets ahold of a paper towel. I've never had to work so hard at keeping a dog out of trouble as I have this one. I seriously hope this is a stage and she outgrows it. Right now, it's 10 fold since i have to keep her and Gabby separated while Gab heals from her spay. I made the mistake of letting them both outside together yesterday and we weren't out the door before Issy jumped on her. Add insult to injury, I made Gabby a new dress yesterday and I guess it fell off the counter on to the floor. Issy shredded the organza overlay on it. Looks like the finishing touches were put on with a weed whacker. I was so mad. The dress never made it onto a dogs body. |

If I were to move the washable pad to another location, Brandi would stop using it so it remains where I don't want it to be but hey she's not peeing all over my hardwood floors.:p |
Molly and Lilly will only tear one brand of pee pads the doggie solutions ones. They leave the rest alone and just do the business on it. |
that is one thing Suzi did not do when she was a puppy, She moved them a few times, but never chewed them up. my shih tzu never did it either, but did get a hold of a paper towel, made her sick, luckily she did not have a blockage from doing that. Funny thing about Suzi is she use to chew and bite on my clothes, blankets, stuff like that, she ruined so many of my clothes making holes in them. i'd try the tray or washable pee pads, if I had a puppy pad chewer. |
I had a dog in the hospital last month who ate peepee pad. She was very sick and we thought she would have to have surgery. It was an expensive lesson to learn but we now use only washable pads. It seems expensive to buy them but then if you figure what you spend on disposable over a period of time, it really isn't. We have 6 toy dogs and 4 don't go out to potty (no fenced yard and they are very small). The other 2 use pads and go out both. I put down 2 clean large pads in the morning and they last ok till the next morning. We have 12 pads so we only use each set about once a week. They say they are good for about 300 washings. We will see how it goes. Louise |
For whatever it's worth - Gracie shredded them when she was a puppy so we went with the washable ones. She's about 15 months old now and she leaves the disposables alone. She'll grab any piece of kleenex or papertowel and shred if not caught right away, but leaves pee pads alone now. Don't know why - but I like it. |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...while-ago.html This is the post describing the method I use, I don't use puppy pads, I just use newspapers, and then if I'm traveling I'll throw down a puppy pad, and usually he doesn't bug them anymore. |
yes im constantly on top of Bruno to not chew his pads, but im still not ready to buy washable pads..Its a drag to go to laundry mat..he seems to be getting better...how much does a yorkie have to chew to get Sick? |
thank you for info! |
how much did she eat? |
I never had a problem with Gracie chewing the pads because the frame held them tight enough that she couldn't move them. I did have issues with her chewing just about everything else though. Really, the only thing that stopped it was giving her something that she really enjoyed chewing much more than what she was devouring in the house. I was actually afraid she would hurt herself by eating something horrible that she would manage to get a hold of. |

Gizmo had stomach pains, vomiting every time she ate. We were afraid she had some blockage and would require surgery but hospitalization, iv's and medication worked. The dogs adjusted to the washable pads with no problem. The leftover disposable ones are packed away for emergencies. Louise |
