Is my Yorkie a full breed 1 Attachment(s) Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum and would love your help. My little Fonzie is 9 months old. As he grows I'm starting to wonder if he is in fact a full bred Yorkie like his documents from his breeder say. We didn't get him directly from the breeder. I've searched and searched different mixes and I'm starting to think that he is either a Yorkie-Poodle mix or a Yorkie-Maltese mix. I have attached a pic of him. I'll try and upload a few more. If anyone can give me their opinions that would be great! Thanks |
Welcome. Fonzie is so cute. He looks like a yorkie to me. He just isn't bred to the standard. A lot of them have floppy ears and they look so cute. I don't see Poodle or Maltese in him. |
I'm no expert, but he looks all yorkie handsomness to me!! What a cutie! |
Welcome to Yt fellow Canadian! |
What a cutie! Looks like a yorkie to me! There is so much variation within the breed so it's hard to tell based solely off looks...you can always do a DNA test but I wouldn't think that it would really matter too much. Fonzie looks like he's stolen your heart! Adorable! |
I think the ears show that there is another breed mixed in, even those Yorkies with floppy ears don't have very big ears. My guess is he's Yorkie/Maltese, if his hair is straight, and if it's curly than perhaps it would be the poodle, both of which have longer droopy ears. Whatever he is, Fronzie's a little doll, glad he found a good home! |
You could do a DNA test on him. He looks mostly yorkie and the test would tell you for sure. |
Hes sooooo handsome looks to be yorkie to me :) Regardless Hes super cute! |
Adorable. Do the Mars DNA breed identification if you want to know for sure. |
He is a very cute little guy. His ears may not be up because you didn't trim the heavy hair off them. His face is not exactly Yorkie. He could be a mix or just from stock that is not near to the Yorkshire Terrier standard. He does look like some Yorkie/Maltese mixes I have seen. Try trimming the hair off his ears and see if they will go up? |
Thanks everyone. He sure has stolen our hearts! We'd do anything for him. I have tried to trim the hair on his ears really short but they just won't stay up. I've massaged them daily for weeks and nothing. Oh well, my little guy has big floppy ears - I love it! Thanks again! :) |
He may be too old to get ears up, I don't know if there is an age after which they are "trained" down. You said you tired to trim his ears so they'd stand. Did you have a groomer do it? My yorkiepoo has always had floppy ears, I like it. One time the groomer did her ears like a yorkie and they take the tips VERY short, almost shaved sort of. After that grooming one of her ears stood up..not straight straight, but clearly up. The other stayed drooped. As her hair grew the straight ear gradually drooped again. If you want to try straight again I'd suggest a groomer trim the ears (unless that was what you did already!) There is a pic in my album with one ear up, and I think that was after a couple of weeks from the grooming. Maggie is very good at moving her ears around and sometimes really perks them up. I think my baby looks more like a yorkie than some yorkies I've seen, and she is a yorkipoo, so there is no telling what your guy is. He could very well be all yorkie. I'd do the DNA test if you can afford it, heard they are not that much. It would just be nice to have that doubt out of your head, and then you would know what he is, or isn't. |
Maggiefromnj: I just saw your pics of Maggie - I can't believe the similarities with Fonzie. This is where I get so confused! From their ears, to their faces to the fur and colour. They look so similar. See his fur is not long and silky. If we don't keep it short it gets very thick and matted. As for the ears, I did bring him to a groomer. The only time they stay up is when he is lying down. As soon as he gets up, they flop right back down! But again, I'm not concerned about his ears. I love them just the way they are! |
My purebred Yorkie has a curly very cottony coat. some features are very confusing. |
He looks yorkie to me with big ears that are floppy |
