Paw Protection My pool area is all cement and my boys LOVE swimming in the pool with the kids... but their pads get soft from the water and then running on the cement all day, they end up raw. Poor Dex was limping so badly last weekend. I don't want it to happen again and I've been scouring the pet stores for things to use on their pads for protection against the ground. They used to make these little shoes that looked like heavy duty balloons and I thought those would work but when I went to buy them they were taken off the shelves because they didn't work well, she told me. So then she found this wax stuff that you rub on their pads and between their toes to protect their feet from hot cement, water, salt, gravel, etc.... I bought some, but I am not sure how this will work. won't the water wash it off or the cement scrape it off. It appears to be just a wax for the surface of the pads. Anyone know anything else I can try in case this does not work? we should know this weekend if this will work. Need some ideas! |
bbn What about booties? The wax sounds interesting. When chachi and jewels pads get dry I put bag balm on but I dont think that would work well for water |

Oh yes, it's those disposable rubber ones I wanted to try. Those are what I was looking for, but the stores around here don't sell them anymore. Thanks for the link!!! I think I will purchase them! :) My dogs would not keep winter boots on, there is no way they'd keep the water shoes on... I only wish, they are really cute! They would rip them off each other in a second. For some reason they just don't adjust tight enough around their little legs so they fall off within 3 steps. bummer! |

Good thread! Jackson's paw pads don't seem to be too bothered, but the other day he was running around the pool cement so much that he ripped his nail through the quick. It was bleeding EVERYWHERE -- big ole' mess! He would never keep anything on his feet either tho. I'm curious about the wax. |
Well, it certainly worked for our Harry boy - different scenario though (ice and snow, collecting in balls between his toes). It just wipes on, and sort of dries clear and non-sticky :) It might be worth you reading some of the reviews on Amazon? I personally think it's excellent...Sally + Harry x |
Unfortunately, those little rubber booties don't work very well. I tried them for Thor. First, they are designed more for a paw that is significantly larger than the uh, wrist. Those boots just roll off narrow little yorkie paws. Also, they ARE rubber, and they stick to yorkie hair just like a rubber banded top knot would. Maybe if you rolled them on after the paw was wet? They aren't very expensive, so it's not the end of the world if they don't work out. |

I'm surprised the Pawz Dog Boots were taken off the shelves as they are the #1 selling dog boot in the world. It's true that the rubber is not quite ideal for long Yorkie hair but once you get them on they stay on without issue. They may be just what you are looking for. It's possible the Musher's Secret will work however I think it works best for protection from ice and snow rather than from rough ground. Feel free to PM me for help with sizing and a discount code. I would be concerned about putting shoes of any kind on their feet if they like to swim. It could cause a problem with their being able to paddle properly. Yes... I bought something similar to Musher's secret. Its a wax and I just rub his paws in it before we go outside. It says it's good for hot pavement/cement, water, gravel, ice, snow, etc... I used it on him yesterday and I'll use it again on saturday. Hopefully this stuff works... I've heard many mixed reviews on the rubber booties. I would like to try 1 pair, maybe I'll try the pet store that I actually saw them in years ago, (its the next town over and I don't go that way often) before I buy a package of 12 if they don't work.
