Is it bad to take outside when its Hot? I finally got my little Emy to accept her harness, so I like to take her outside every chance I get. Its been so hot here, 98-99, and we have a paved concrete circular driveway that is white in color, but by the time we get halfway around it, she's panting....I don't want her to overheat, but I have to take her out....don't I?...How hot is too hot for a 13 week old...I like to take her out in the morning when its cool and she's ok..but in afternoon, I always end up picking her up cause I get worried about her being black and all.:animal-pa |
Does she have all her shots? If the driveway is hot to your bare feet its hot to her paws. I know 99 is to hot for me so I could never walk Callie in that heat. Callie has a doggy door and goes out when she needs to potty and comes back in. I would make sure your puppy has plenty of water and you walk early in the morning or later at night. |
personally i think 98 would be too hot. walking on the pavement may burn her little feet... |
Yeah...we've got some ridiculous heat going on in the SE right now (I think it got up to 103-105 today...UGHHH). And the past couple of days, I've only been taking my pup outside to take care of her business and then it's right back in the apartment. Even at night it is still uncomfortably hot and humid! And we also just stay in the grass...I worry about her little paws and we don't have any type of covering for them. More play time indoors for now! |
It was 108 here today-I've been walking Jaeger really early when its still in the 80s, or not at all. He's been begging to go outside and lay on the concrete for a few minutes at a time. He's not a blanket snuggled, and not shivering, but I think he's chilly in the A/C now that his puppy fur is falling out. Might have to get him some tshirts. |
I would say it is definitely too hot. If your pup has had all vaccinations you can go directly to a grassy area (you carry the pup) and give command to go potty, pick the pup back up and go back inside. You can always let your puppy wear the harness inside attached to a leash and hooked to you. |
Bella's been wanting to go for walks also. It's been around 102 here. I know the blacktop is to hot, so we do a couple laps around the house in the grass. I need to put her on the treadmill. |
Yesterday I took Harley to the Canada Day festivities, and I soaked him in water before we left, he was dry when we got there, and I soaked him again before we left to come back. I also offered him far more water than he usually drinks. I think if it was any hotter out (33 humidex, not sure what that is in F) we would have stayed inside, And when we got there we sat in the shade. As mentioned about the concrete, I didn't let him walk on pavement, just grass. I think when it gets that hot only take them out when it's necessary. That leads me to a spin off question. If you have to travel in a non-air conditioned car with your baby for a long trip, what ways can you keep them cool? Right now I'm freezing a water bottle which I will wrap in a thin blanket and put in his crate (we have a 3 hour drive this afternoon). And of course I'll have the windows open too. |
I don't take them out when it's oppressively hot outside. they don't like it either. However, we are camping right now...we set up a big x pen for all 3 of them. We put in a shaded area...keep plenty of water out there,,..OH! and we bought astro turf to put on the ground...I have 2 that like to eat grass, and flowers! also...will help with fleas...we do walk them but, not when it's super hot. and the roads are mostly dirt. |

I would never take a 13 week old dog in the heat. We have a back yard and we let them out early in the morning and in the evening. During the day we use a pee pad indoors where we have cental air. |
No, I don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be. Yes you have to be more cautious in the heat. I don't keep Jackson out running or anything for long periods of time and we go for walks early or later. Most of his exercise in the summer comes from swimming. Mainly because he doesn't like the heat. But I know lots of dogs who don't mind the heat as much and do better. I think it just depends on the individual dog. I think it's important to be smart about it... always water them down, have water for them to drink, don't walk on burning hot pavement... but no reason they can't go outside and go to the bathroom or go out in short increments if they desire. Just have common sense about it :) |
You could also get her some little paw protectors, though they might not stay on tiny little puppy feet. Dog's pads are more rugged than our own feet are (would you want to walk three miles on a sidewalk barefoot, ever?). I would look to see if she is "high stepping" or looks like she is trying to keep a paw off the pavement at all times. Also, is she happy to go out, or does she race back indoors? Is she licking her feet afterward, maybe trying to soothe them? |
