New puppy questions Hello, I finally got my yorkie :) She is 12 weeks old weighs 2lbs Her name is Emma she is the sweetest little thing! She doesn't seem to have a lot of hair or a very thick coat. The breeder was feeding her Iams I am slowly switching her to Blue Buffalo. Is there something else I could be giving her to help with her hair? Any special treats? Or neat products you could recommend? I am sure I will have a lot more questions...I am so glad you guys are here it's nice to have someone to talk too about our Yorkies :) Thank you' Suzy |
Hi and welcome to YT! Congrats on your new baby. I don't know about that food as we don't have that in SA, but I'm sure some one will come along and assist. I do, however, use coconut oil on my boy and I think he has a great coat. Also, remember that their coats change and thicken as they grow older and out off their puppy coat. So for now, while she's still a baby, I think feeding a good quality food is key, no grooming dry hair and not bathing her too often, and a great shampoo and conditioner! Yorkies are not supposed to have undercoats so you will find the fur quite a bit different than most dogs. A Yorkie with a silky coat will many times have a "thin" coat and that is natural for a Yorkie. It is also the reason that they tend to get cold very easily. I know some people object to putting clothing on a dog but some dogs do need the added insulation. I do not suggest putting clothing on a puppy but it may be something your baby will need in the future when the weather get colder. I'm sure a good supplement would not be a bad idea as long as you give the proper amount for the pup's size. Genetics have much to do with the coat so do not expect miracles. A supplement will help maintain healthy skin that supports a healthy coat. Of course keep your pet free of all fleas. Fleas can torment your pet and cause damage to it's coat. I have used "The Missing Link" for Gracie and it is a good one containing all the omega 3's. It is also contains added enzymes that many kibble eating dog's miss out on. Thank you for the information on the "The Missing Link" I will look intot that for sure. Also glad to hear someone else is using the Blue Buffalo. Question about the missing link do I mix this with her food. She is eating just dry food and that leads up to my next question should she be eating just dry food or should I give her some moist food also? Thanks again |
Hello and welcome to u and Emma. I think feeding wet and dry or just dry I'd s matter of personal preference. Yorkies like other small breeds are prone to dental decay and so dry can help with this. If you are cleaning your Emma's teeth a little moist should do no hard and it sometimes make the food a bit more palatable for them. Some folks add yogurt or coconut oil to the kibble but I'm not do sure this is good for pups. I'm sure someone else will keep you right on this. I feed my girls dry with a teaspoon of moist chicken to encourage them to eat. Neither of them are into dry only. |

Your baby is very pretty! The coat will change alot over the first year. I wouldn't worry as long as it covers evenly. Blue Buffalo is a very good food,all of my dogs eat it and love it. I have just started using cocanut oil for my dogs. My pom has very dry hair and I have started using it as a deep conditioner before baths. Mina (yorkie) doesnt seem to need it on her hair,but she loves to lick it off of my fingers if I use it for a lotion on my hands. |

My Abby came to us slightly undernourished with a dry coat. I got her on a good food right away (she wouldn't eat the other once she had a taste of the good stuff!)and clipped away the old coat a little at a time. This also taught her to sit nicely for grooming. At 10 months she has a thin silky coat that shimmers, never a mat or knot. Welcome! |
