Leba for cleaning the teeth of those fuss pots Leba Dental Spray for Dogs and Cats I highly recommend this product. It's a wee bit pricey but considering the money you'll save on cleaning and removing the risk of anaesthesia on your dogs it's worth it. Lebalab Inc |
I am using HealthMouth which has obtained the VOHC seal. The company's clinical trials were headed by Dr Jean Dodds. I don't think any of these products take the place of a dental cleaning under anesthesia - I brush daily and feed grain free home cooked organic food and my 3.5 year old yorkie had 7 teeth extracted due to dental disease that was identified via X-rays. Leba has only anecdotal evidence to support its claims and no science behind it. Here is a product comparison in case you are like me and want science not marketing to guide your product choice. Plus if you like holistic approaches, dr Dodds is like the holistic guru and even won holistic vet of the year at one time. Healthy Mouth | Dog, Cat, Horse |
I've been using TropiClean gel. It really does work, but I keep forgetting to do it so the tartar has started to reappear. Going RIGHT NOW to torture, er I mean clean my doggy's teeth:laugh: |

So I only end up using it once every other week or so, just to keep up with his teeth. He gets them brushed with CET toothpaste almost every day (sometimes I forget a day or two, but generally speaking, every day). But to be honest, I'm not sure it's worth the price or that I'll buy it again. I've had my Petzlife gel for well over a year and there is still a good amount left in the bottle. I think I purchased it for $20. There was a good week about a month ago where I did not do anything with his teeth because we were on vacation and I had forgot his stuff. Well when we got home, I had noticed a tad of build-up from the not brushing or doing anything... nothing major, but *I* noticed lol... and I brushed and put a little petzlife on and it was gone by the next morning. Do you have the gel or the water additive? I think it's a great product, and I LOVE that it's VOHC approved. I can't really judge it well because Jackson had his teeth professionally cleaned in November so they've looked great since then (w/ brushing, and petzlife a few times a week too) but I am not sure I'll purchase it again simply due to price and having other products work just as good. If they lowered their cost, I'd be more willing to buy again. I do appreciate the lack of alcohol in it, as I know petzlife does have a small amount, but it doesn't make me uncomfortable enough with my 16lb healthy dog. |
I am a non believer in any product completely eliminating the need for dentals. I have tried different products and tooth brushing and my experience has been that the pups still needed dentals. Periodontal disease is prevalent in yorkies and leads to liver, cardiac and renal issues if not dealt with. Not saying the products and/or tooth brushing does not help.....they just do not eliminate the need for dentals. As for the risk of anesthesia, I honestly feel the risk of illness due to periodontal disease is much higher. |

Yes, I think you are 100% right. I am very lucky in that my girls have only needed one dental so far, around age 3-ish, they are now 6 and almost 6. Probably be due again soon, but the vet at last checkup said that there teeth looked great:) So I would say that the products and brushing DO help, but a lot of it is genetic too, and luck of the draw. |

Before Jackson's dental, I was really really bad with teeth up keep. I honestly brushed maybe once every 2 months and used the petzlife once a week or once every other week. And with considering that, his teeth were actually pretty good. He wasn't in dire need of a dental cleaning, had minimal build up on his four canines, but had to go under for a different tooth problem, but the veterinary dentist commented on how strong his teeth were but that I must brush every day! I've noticed a difference since I started brushing and using some dental products though. Within the first year of his life, he had gotten that little bit of tarter build up on those canines because I had never done anything. Now it's been almost 9 months since his dental, and with me brushing a lot and using products, they are perfectly white. They almost look like they were JUST cleaned professionally. Since that experience, I've become much more aware of how important dental health is, and take much better care of his mouth! Also when I took him in, he had a dead tooth in the front that had to be pulled. I know exactly what it was from once she told me about the tooth... but had NO idea he had a "dead" tooth, as his breath never smelled, etc! If not for an x-ray, I wouldn't have known and neither did his regular vet at every check-up. So anyways it made me realize how important it is to get them in for a check even if it seems nothing is wrong! |
Yes I have the water additive. I think the price is worth it. I'm in agreement on the gel as I had trouble using it. The dentist we saw is a big fan of healthymouth and it was the only thing he really recommended besides brushing daily. |
Britster I use petzlife on my pup I use Leba on the older dog because the brushing wasn't elope losing and I wasn't putting him under. My friend used Leba on her 6 year old who never had her teeth cleaned. After a week of twice a day use all the crap fell off her teeth. I was using petzlife on Teegy and it definitely helped but went to Leba for heavier duty Love both Leba and petzlife never ward of healthmouth |
