what are the best brushes/ brushing regime? :scratchhe I have a licking brush, but even though i use it every day it does not seem to get all the knots out.Any ideas on what good products to use on his daily brushing would be recommended. |
Do you mean a brush that your dog likes to lick? :D Use a pin brush that does not have balls at the tips. The balls can damage hair and make brushing more difficult. In addition to a brush, buy a good comb. Brushing alone is not enough. A small comb is also perfect for face and legs. I don't over-brush my boys' full coats because brushing a dirty coat can damage it (and they get "dirty" quickly). I just stay on top of anything that looks like a knot is forming and I make the guys look presentable. |

I usually use a good metal grooming comb to comb through Gracie's hair first. I do use a pin brush after getting any tangles out sometimes. She doesn't really need the brush everyday though. I have a 4" comb for her face and legs and a 7" comb for her body. |

I would not use a slicker brush on a Yorkie. They are made for getting undercoat out of thick coated breeds. |

Petsmart recommends the slicker brushes for yorkies, too. *eyeroll* I used it on Jaeger for a few months when his puppy coat was just falling out and it was a real jungle, along with a pin brush and a combo comb, but then switched to just the comb and brush. Right now his coat is thin-waiting for the next wave of hair to grow to push more of his puppy coat off, so I'm just using the pin brush unless i find a tangle. I always spray on leave in conditioner, then brush. |
I use a wooden pin brush by Chris Christensen, but Kristin (Maximo) sells one by #1 All Systems that is excellent, and it's not as costly as the Chris Christensen. I use the Chris Christensen face/leg comb (just like the Madan moustache comb but the price on the Madan is much better), and I love it. I am going to order the moustache comb so use as an extra comb, a larger Madan comb, and one of the pin brushes. I have gotten combs and a brush from toplinepet.com and have been happy with the products. I used to use the Grayhound combs on my cats but the ones I have purchased from toplinepet are good quality and the prices are very reasonable. They are certainly much better than what you will find at PetCo/PetSmart. |

I think they recommend the slicker brush to get the mats out. Frankly I don't like the slicker brush on yorkies either. My bichon is double coated and that's what I use on her. Kirby's hair is something else. She needs a slicker brush. I prefer to use the madan pin on my yorkie. Khloe's hair is thin and silky. I always spray them both with detangler. To me it seems that a slicker brush would hurt a yorkie's skin to me since they aren't double coated. I have only needed the slicker brush on Khloe's legs and backside. |
