about chewing on rugs is there a way that we can get our 10 month old to stop chewing on the rugs. she flip them over and chew on the back side of some rugs and some she will just do the coner of them. we tell her stop chewing on it but she just don't listen to us. we do try and give her a toy to chew but she don't want it lot of the time she will just move it over to the side or acted like she want it to get us to leave her alone lot of the time. |
When either of my pups tried to chew on anything that they shouldn't, I would say no and then give them something that they could chew safely. Some are more vigorous chewers than others and Priss is one, she is an avid chewer. Good luck and be persistent. |
I have a 10 week old rug chewer myself. she mostly chews around the corners of the area rugs. I have lots of other things on the floor for chewing, but can't seem to keep her away from the rugs. I know how frustrating it is, but I guess just keeping saying (NO) and giving her something else to chew that tastes better then the rug!!! |
I do say no to her and that don't work. there other things on the floor for her to chew on but she goes for the rugs a lot more when we are not in the room with her. she will chew on anything if she can get hold of. |
Dexter likes chewing on anything cloth too. He had rawhide bones and rubber chew toys, but wanted cloth. He chewed up the sheet and comforter on my bed...made actual holes. He was sitting on my lap one day and I didn't even notice until I looked down and realized he had chewed a hole in one of my favorite shirts. If I wear capris, he will ches to little strings at the bottom of the legs. I finally went and got him stuffed animals and they seemed to help. If you do that, make sure they are stuffed toys MADE for dogs. I know som many people who buy kids stuffed animals for their dogs and the cloth and the stuffing may be very hazardous to the pups. |
will she does have stuffed toys and she get whole in alo of them too. and a lot of the time I have to sew them back up so she can play with them longer. but I have to throw of toys out since they can't be fixed. and she try to get the sheet or whatever on the bed if we let her. but she go for the rug when we are not looking thats is when she is run around the house most of the day. |
Try putting something she doesn't like the taste of on it like chilli powder. I used washing up liquid with one of my older dogs. |
knowing her she would lick it off. she lick on just about anything that she can get her month on. but i don't know if we wanted to use chilli powder since I don't know what that would do to her. and too I thought that they couldn't have anything hot since it would brother them or make them sick. and too I don't think mom would want to use it either. |

we can't be in the same room all the time since she don't want to be in the kitchen when we are cooking. but just about every room in this house has rugs. and how can u block off the living room when u have to walk in there to the kitchen and the rug she does it more on is the one at the front door. but she has done some on the kitchen when she was going in there and she try to do the rugs in my parent room but mom get a hold of her before she does anything to it. but lot of the time she like to flord them over thats how we find the one in the living room and sometime the one in the other room when we even in there. but she is very senakey when she does all this. |
we do say no to her and she just don't listen to that. but i do try to give her other toys that she can chew on when i see her do this all the time. but lot of the time she just don't want it. and sometime she just act like she want it to get us to leave her alone and she will just go right back to what she is doing. |
Stuffed toys and rubber toys are not for chewing on they are for playing with. Get her some bully sticks. They are a meat product and dogs love them. It will keep her out of trouble. My dog was a chewer from the time she was a puppy but once we got her the bully sticks the problem stopped. Because they are a meat product dogs are very attracted to them and they last a very long time if you get the 12 inch size. |

I'm not in the habit of feeding my dogs washing up liquid or chilli sorry must be the Brit sense of humour. However strong smelling stuff can put them off like bitter lime dogs go with their sense of smell if it smells rank they won't eat it. |

I personally think the op just has to be VERY diligent....is someone at home most of the time? :) Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
yeah they just might not mess with it but with her we never know she lick on just about everything u put in front of her. |
we have toys that are just for chewing on them but it just don't stop her from going after the rung. but we might do the bull sticks that the only other thing that we haven't tryed yet. but she does have few of the treat toys but one she wont bother playing with yet. I just don't know why she wont mess wit it. but the blue one that look like bone and has a teat laying in it that she has to work out she love that one we got it for her yestersday. and that one we can put water in it and frozze it and she really love it when we do that keep her busy for hours at a time. |
yeah but I would use any of them. I just wish she would get out of this chewing part and the bitting too |
I can tell you that most of the plastic toys that are sold as chew toys dogs just do not like. Dogs like meat. They are naturally attracted to it. Your dog needs to chew but you have not given her the right substance to get her away from the rug. Some rugs (especially throw rugs) have a backing on them that attracts dogs and cats to them. Some animals will pee on them while some dogs will chew them. Help your dog out and either get her real raw bones (yuck) or bully sticks. I was afraid my dog was going to kill herself because she kept sneaking away and stealing things to chew on that were very dangerous for her. Besides the destruction of items in the house she could very well get a blockage in her digestive system by chewing these things. |
Get her the Bully Sticks! They work great. My pup even goes after the non-stinky kind, although if you want to get her attention away from the rugs, get the stinky one (it's really not that bad - but the kisses after a good long chew are awful!) Also, is there any way you can take up the rug temporarily? Chewing is a natural behavior for puppies. It may dissapate when she gets older. Moreover, on a sad note, I had a Wheaton that expired because he chewed on an area rug (while I was not home) and it twisted in his stomach. It can be very dangerious for your pup to ingest rug material. Himalayan chews may also work - but that's a very hard chew. The bully sticks are easy to handle. If you go to a private pet store (NOT A CHAIN) you may find other natural products (not rawhide) that are safe for your puppy. It's a huge market now. Lucy also has some kind of horn thing that she goes to every once in awile. Best wishes, Tracey |
Unfortunately puppies find something they like and chew. You can certainly tell them no if you catch them in the act. You can try the various sprays sold at pet stores. I didn't find any of those to work. What has helped us with Bailey are antlers. They sell them on line or certain stores. Bailey is currently chewing down his 7th one. It has saved our home from certain ruin. However, today Natalie left to grab a few groceries and I was out in the garage washing my bike. I wasn't gone two minutes and Bailey had jumped up on the counter, grabbed yesterday's mail and was halfway in to tearing up the first letter. And he's a year and 3 months. Guess you just have to stay on top of them. |
Oh, yes. I can identify with the dog desire to chew and tear paper! Grace turned 2 in May and still needs to chew. She likes to dig at any newspaper or magazine she finds on the floor.(fortunately, cannot jump on the counter) If she does not have a bully stick handy she will revert to chewing what ever she can get her teeth into. She does not need to chew her bully sticks as much as she did when she was a puppy but she still chews them at least once a day. |
I am a believer in Bitter Blast! |
the spray don't work. we tryed it at first it seem like it's going to work but after a while she just went right back to it. she get hold of things and chew on it. when I thought I had all of it pick up she hide some on me where I wouldn't see it. she did that tonight on me. and it don't help much she going under the bed to get a way from me and chew on it some more. |
fancy not a year yet she will be a year next month she just 10 months old. I wish she would stop some of this chewing other things that are not her toys. and the bitting that would help a lot around here. it just seem like she just want to do what she want to no matter what could happen to her. we try to tell her and say no or stop that and that don't work with her. and now she poping on the rugs or on the floor in the living room for some reason. but she has been carring it out from the bathroom some. but she just started back to doing the other this past week or 2. but we just don't know why she going backwards on us for on somethings. she just a mess right now it just seem like that. |
