Did Not Know Dog Food Could be so Complicated Fairly new Yorkie owner. I've been reading posts about pet food, and WOW. I asked the people we bought Dexter from and they said they use Pedigree puppy. I asked the vet about it, and he said as long as it seems to be agreeing with him, it will be fine. Now he does get treats. I researched what is safe for him. Like avoiding apple seeds. But as a treat, he loves apples and carrots. Never had seen a dog eat apples or carrots before Dexter. Of course these we use sparingly. I'm just worried now his dog food isn't good enough. |
I was like you and started out feeding whatever the breeder fed Georgie (can't remember now). I gradually changed him to a grain free food. Georgie loves Acana and does great with it. It's more expensive but in the long run its so much better for them. |
I'm not really worried about price. He is so tiny and eats so little, an eight pound bag lasts me forever any way. Thank you so much. I'm learning to look for meat products as the first few ingredients. The Pedigree list corn meal as the first ingredient. YIKES. :eek: Never knew. |
Welcome! Apples and carrots are great treats! Toki loved cold baby carrots when she was teething and still loves them! The thing with foods like Pedigree is that they contain corn as the main ingredient and meat by-products which are no good for your puppy. There are so many good brands of dog foods that will cost you the same amount of money, if not less, that have quality ingredients. I remember doing a TON of research figuring out what to feed Toki...there is no single correct food to feed your pup! Find something with quality ingredients that you feel comfortable feeding your dog that is affordable! Acana is well-loved on this forum! It can be a little more expensive than other foods but you will feed less of it and your pup will absorb more of the good stuff in it! I'm feeding my 10 m/o puppy Fromm's GF Beef Frittata Veg kibble in the evenings. Fromm is very affordable and is a small company based out of Wisconsin that uses only US ingredients. Others here can give you other good food recommendations! There is lots of good stuff out there! |
Yup and to be blunt it's crap (sorry not trying to offend). They are tiny we feed Acana for Georgie and our Boxer Coco (75lbs) and she can eat LOL!!!! I would say Acana, Orijen and Blue Buffalo. Others here have other recommendations include home cooking and raw all I feel are good options. Georgie also loves apples and carrots. He also get non fat plain yogurt with probiotics it's great for them as well. |
You will find a lot of different attitudes about dog food even here. I personally was unaware of what was being used to make "dog food" these days until I got Gracie. She refused to eat any type of kibble as a puppy. I was forced to make her food for the first year of her life which forced me to read up on dog nutrition and also the pet food industry. I now feed a commercial raw gain free food that she loves and does very well on. Many of the "grocery store" foods have very poor quality ingredients. Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings |
