Doggy day care ?! Hello, I was wondering if any your babies goes to doggy day cares? One big concern I have is the Truffles will be the smallest one in the care and get accident or paw down by other dogs.... some day cares are separated small, medium and large dogs but today I finally took her for evaluation at one of pet resort and she was the smallest and she didn't know what to do.. when all these dogs were walk by her and sniff her and walk away.... we saw her in live camera in the room.. she is the people dog so she went to all the day care providers feet, near them... didn't looks scared or anything. she is single dog and stay home sleeping all day when nobody around but some times I would like to take her for rainy days or when we can't take her with us, she can go for few hours or half day etc...I want her to be comfortable to be at day care... Is any one had good and bad experience at day cares? or advice will be appreciated ;) |
A similar thing happened when I took Toki to Camp Bow Wow two times. She did not really interact with the other dogs...she liked to play with the camp counselors and sometimes I'd see them counselors just carrying her around (I think they felt bad because she was the littlest by a considerable amount and would sit off to the side)...a couple times they'd try to put her near some equipment to play on and she'd just walk off back to the perimeter of the play area. I think now that she's older, maybe she'll do better at doggy day care since she's more socialized and more independent. I hope so! Toki really enjoys going to the dog park now and playing with others so I think I'll try the doggy day care sometime to see if anything has changed. |
Day care can be a terrific experience for dogs. Roxy LOVES hers. She has never met a dog or person she didn't love. She fits in really well and they are all her friends. How well yours will do can have a lot to do with her personality. The employees should watch out for her closely during her first vists there to make sure she is becoming comfortable in the situation. Shy dogs may need some adjustment time. The socialization they get in day care is very much a good thing if the people run the place properly. That's a judgment call you have to make. I don't see very much one-on-one play between Roxy & other dogs while watching her over the internet. She walks around alll the time. The first few times I took her for the afternoon, she wanted to go back in with the dogs when I picked her up instead of going home. Now she understands that she gets to come back. When we pull into day care, she is crazy excited to go inside. To her, this place is heaven. I actually prefer her going to day care than a dog park where people don't watch their dogs and the dogs have not been temperment tested. If you decide to take her, be aware she will be exhausted when she comes home, so don't worry about that. She going to want to sleep, sleep, sleep. ;-) |
Generally speaking, the more experiences you can give Truffles, the better adjusted & confident she will be. You need to monitor each situation to suit her personality and safety. It's normal for dogs to sniff each other and walk away. It's how they get to know each other. She is probably not accustomed to it, but it is something she needs to know. That is dog language and she will adjust. |
I have not used doggie day care but a friend of mine owns a very popular one. Many of the clients have said that their dogs want to run through the day care door each day because they love it. They also say their pet gets so much attention and exercise that they are pooped in the afternoon! Good luck!! |
I wish we had a doggy day care around here....Mostly its board and trains, or kennel boarding facilities. My suggestion is take your little one to the dog park a few times to get them used to other dogs, assuming you even have a dog park near you. |

Truffles just went 2nd time meetup(yorkies) and it went great! she was not shy as first time and go around more (but more to other yorkie owners feet :D Doggy parks she is getting comfortable too. she lay down and show her stomach soon as big doggy comes to sniff her... she won't run away but interesting to see her that she knows she is the littlest one? ;) Hope we can improve for our babies! good luck to Toki! |

I just took her only one place today and I want to take her to few places in our area to see which one she will feel more comfortable. so good to hear other yorkie babies go to day care too and enjoy !!! Thanks |
I think we just have to go few more to test and see how much organized day care is it and how much they'll pay attention to each doggies too. My kids suggesting to bring her to regular human day-care since she loves little children~!lol but if I could... I would!!! pack her food, toys and pee pad for her LOL |
Be sure the place watches the pups while they are playing and that they sanitize. They should let you tour the facility. My poor Molli got roundworms and giardia from a doggie day care so be cautious! |

.:thumbup::thumb up: even great facility that we had tour before the evaluation, when all these dogs are in a room and pee and poo on floor was little concern me too. I wanted to ask to put pee pad for Truffles on the corner of the room because she is not train to go bathroom in a room like that :p |
Do any of your day cares have outdoor areas for potty breaks? Ours does and I really appreciate that. In fact when Roxy first started going to day care, she was housebroken just fine except for the pooing part. She would pee outside no problem. One trip to day care, and she had the pooing outside all figured out. No more accidents inside. lol! Luv it! |
Jack and Josie goes to day care 2 x a week. They love it. They did not like it at first I think they were scared. They have a couple of other small dogs they hang with now. They have one good buddy they hang out with all day. The small dogs are either in the kitchen with the worker or another area. They have their own play areas. They are never in contact with the bigger dogs. When I pick them up jack stands in the car seat and looks back and barks while wagging his tail. I think he really likes it. They are exhausted when they get home. |
No way would I leave my dog in a day care that is not for small dogs only. I doubt I would leave my dog in any day care. It is way to dangerous to leave a small dog in an area with big dogs. NO WAY. |
