Food and treats Hello, I'm new to YT. :) I have a brand new little baby boy Kingston. I'm not a newbie to puppies, I've had a rescue pup that I found a home for and I have a 2 year old Boston terrier but this is my first Yorkie. My question is, what does everyone feed their yorkies for meals and treats? My boston has allergies and we've been through the entire scale from RAW to science diet to california natural to evo...eventually someone told us about Costco kirkland series by I believe blue diamond, we were hesitant about it but tried it and POOF her allergies cleared up and she is so shinny and soft with no more red bloches or scratching. My breeder suggested sticking with kirkland small bites with occasional ceasar soft food as a treat. We also give him just a spec of nurtical 4 daily. He's so small I'm just unsure what to give him as treats? I've read apples and peas? What does everyone feed their yorkies? Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post! ~Leanne~ |

I can't advise on food sorry, as we have completely different types over here, on the whole. I home-cook for Harry, and leave Royal Canin down for him to snack on. He loves veggies and fruits (the safe ones, of course!) apples I skin, core and de-seed, pieces of banana, tiny bits of green beans and carrots - anything that's in season really! :) What a wonderful name - Kingston! We live about 3 miles from Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey, UK - so I'm biased!! :D Also love Boston Terriers...we had one called Benji, a gorgeous little boy! :) Really look forward to getting to know you all! Thank you for the response! Wow all the way from the UK, that's amazing. One day I'd like to visit the UK, everything seems so clean and proper, what a beautiful place! Not that I don't love the U.S but you're very lucky. I think I'll try just a bit of apple today and see what he does, maybe start start out on one fruit or veggie per week as a snack, kind of like you do with human babies. The only things I know he can't have are grapes, mushrooms, onions, chocolate, pork, and can't remember or think of what else? ~Leanne and Kingston from Washington state~ |
Welcome! I have been feeding Toki Fromm's Grain-free kibble in the evenings (she's currently eating the beef frittata veg and loving it!). The past couple of weeks, I have been giving her raw with green beans in the mornings. For treats, Toki really loves frozen green beans, little cubes of baked sweet potato, and Stella & Chewy's carnivore kisses (she has the kind that is just freeze-dried salmon). I don't really give her too many treats but she has bully sticks, Himalayan chews, and antlers that I give her. She also will accept kibbles for her treats too! I'm a little leery of the Kirkland although it's great that your pup's allergies cleared up. Have you looked at formulas of different brands with similar ingredients to the Kirkland? The Nature's Variety Prairie line has a formula (Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Medley) that looks pretty similar. Post pictures of both of your babies! Boston terriers are so adorable! |

It might be worth you having a look at a sticky at the top of the 'Health and Diet' bit - List of Dangerous Foods for Dogs, very interesting! :) Soooo much to read on here! :D And the UK's lovely - when it's not raining!! Sally + Harry x |
2 Attachment(s) Thanks for the response Tokipoki, yep we've looked at so many foods and so far with Zayda (our boston) it's just working? I have no idea why but it does the trick. Even tried 100% RAW with chicken and veggies and she still had problems but it's something about the kirkland and I have no idea what it is but she just does really well. I think I've heard of the Natures Prairie, our vet has a bunch of premium lines in his oficef and I'll def check it out. :) Here's a couple pics of my babies. Zayda our Boston and Kingston our Yorkie. |
Oh my goodness - utterly, totally, beautifully GORGEOUS - both of them! :D Sally + Harry x |
Another pic of Kingston 1 Attachment(s) Couldn't help it, here's another pic. The little fella just makes me smile! |
Totally scrummy!!! :D Ok, so here's the deal - if EVER you visit the UK, you HAVE to bring your Littlies with you, else you won't be allowed in....does that suit you?!!? ;) :D Sally + Harry x |
Harrysmum~ Thank you! :teeth:Yes! It's a deal then! LOL |
Too stinking cute! Both of them! Kingston looks like a mini baby bear! You are a lucky gal! |
While many people like the fancy $$$ foods, some of them (even the most prestigious made-for-yorkie only preparations that many on this site use) have too much protein for yorkie babies. I'm certainly no expert in this area. I was told to always read the ingredients on all foods for the protein break down. I have been using Eukanuba puppy. As for treats, bully bones and himalayan chews have been recommended to me. My Lucy LOVES the bully treats. If you get them, go to a specialty, small pet store and find the ones that don't stink. The odorless ones are more $$$ but will save you the embarrassment of stinky yorkie kisses. Good luck. Tracey |
Your babies are beautiful! I wish you a lifetime of health and happiness with them. I mostly home-cook, but I have been trying to also feed Katie Fromm Four Star nutritionals. I believe the Kirkland is a very good holistic food, but I would be hesitant that it is produced in a Diamond plant. My father, who lives in California, was feeding his dogs a Kirkland natural kibble until I told him about the Diamond recall. Although it didn't affect California or Washington, the fact that Diamond has had more than one recall scares me. Thank you for the compliments and great information. Someone said that Diamond had a recall but I wasn't aware of it but I'm going to read up on it today. :) |
