How Big Does A Females Part Get When In Heat   A noticed blood today on Ruby's vagina and on the sides of it on her coat. She is now almost 9 months and she hand't had her first heat yet. I took her to the vet on tueseday because she had been licking there a lot and then when I checked her that day I found a big drop of yellowish discharge. So that has stopped and my vet said she had dermatitis in the fold above her vagina. I haven't notice more yellow discharge anymore since then but now its the blood. Its not a lot. My vet gave me some dermal spray and medicated shampoo along with antibiotics to treat her dermatits. Now I think though that what she really has is her first heat cycle. I really don't see her vagina big though. About what size does it get when yorkies go on heat a quater,a nickel or the size of a dime. I have seen other dogs in heat before so I feel kinda stupid but I just want to be sure. Anyways I will take her to the vet again on tuesday to have a vaginal culture done and amke sure its just her heat. Any advise or answers to my confusions will be greatly appreciated. |
Anyone? Please take the time to read it. :( |
I don't have a yorkie girl I have a boy so I can't give you a size estimate, but from your description I am 99% sure she is indeed in heat. From my experience with other female dogs in the past. At first onset of heat cycle sometimes there is no swelling and little indications besides a little blood such as what you are describing. Since you just had the recent problem I would refer to your vet but be very careful with her in the mean time. |
It can vary, but it does sound as though she is in heat. Some swell a LOT and others are nowhere near as noticable. My bet is that she is in heat. Your vet will let you know for sure. |
I only went through it once with Biddy, but I noticed that she didn't get swollen until a few days after she started bleeding. Good luck! |
I think it maybe depends on the dog! Gidget swells enough to notice it! I am sure that others probably get bigger and some that can't really tell! That is JMO though, from seeing Gidget and my SIL's dog! |
My girls seem to swell a lot after the bleeding stops (or turned light pink) they were swollen a bit before that, but got, I would say over double the size of normal, after the bleeding slowed down/stopped. They did lick a lot during heat, my girls are very "clean" girls and the only time I would notice blood would be on their leg when they had been sleeping, otherwise they kept the area very clean. |
Im almost sure Ruby has her first heat. Like others mentioned some gilrs get swollen and others not so much. Gucci got swollen and was noticeable. Since you are treating her dermatitis, i guess you can check with your vet. |
Macy just went through her first heat and she was very very swollen. I couldnt tell you for sure but bigger than a nickle, it was much BIGGer than I thought it would be. She was very good about keeping herself clean- I put a premie diaper on her with a hole cut out for her tail and that worked well. Except the first two times I did put the diaper on she poohed in it within minutes, but after that she was fine. GOOD LUCK! |
Thanks to all for the help and input. It sure helps and answersa few questions. |
LOL It does depend on the female.... grape size to WALNUT ;) |
Oh lord..You will know believe me! Before Kelsey went in heat she was having all of the symptoms and I was checking for that. And then it seemed overnight her hmm hmmm got REALLY swollen and she would always lick at it and I could tell she was very unhappy! I think they have PMS too...b/c she was a big grump the whole time! :p |

I know - when Biddy went into heat, I kept telling her how bad I felt that dogs can't have chocolate!!! I know it helps me!! |
Try between a nickle and a quarter but closer to the quarter. I call it Gracie's strawberry when she's in...it gets pretty large and there is NO missing it! |
