Giving lucy more room Hi, As you may know, I've had Lucy for a little over a week now. She's 5 months. So far, so good. She hasn't pee'd or pooped in the house. She sleeps with me (Ex-pen?? forgetaboutit!!! She's miserable in that thing.) Anyway, I have her restricted to my tile floor kitchen. She has a double donut couch, toys & a space under my butcher block island to hang out. She doesn't pee a lot. Maybe twice per day, sometimes once only. Same with poop. Although we take her out frequently. I'm thinking about giving Lucy more room to rumble in my home. Perhaps extending her to the dining room and living room as well. My fear is that she'll start sniffing and pee/poop somewhere that I don't see. How much time should I wait to give my Lucy more space in my home? It's working out too well so far (which doesn't usually happen for me.) I don't want to jinx my good fortune. What d'ya think I should do? Thanks much! Tracey |
I have an almost 8 month old that I restrict to the living, kitchen and dining area. I remove all stairs and shut bedroom and bathroom doors. She does fairly well with potty but I still find things she or my older yorkie have peed on :eek: I would love to restrict her even more, but this wouldn't be fair to Sugar, the older girl, and they are a very bonded pair. I also have all tile so it isn't too big of a deal if she has accidents. She does occasionally pee on the area rug or a blanket on the ground, however :cool: |
I personally would restrict her a little while longer - not because of the pee-ing and poop-ing, but because of all the other naughty stuff she might find to do...like chew cables, wires etc. :eek: :D I always find it amazing, huuuuge as Harry is (!) the tiny, slim places he can get into :) I have to barricade the underside of my computer desk when I go out...! I also found that with enough different chews, she really hasn't had any interest in my kitchen table/cabinets (yet????) So in the kitchen she'll stay for now. Thanks everybody!!! If it aint broke, dont fix it!!! She is still young...you can keep her restricted a little longer...and when you do increase her stomping grounds, just do one area at a time...and I would then put her on a leash attached to you so you KNOW she isnt off, pee/pooping in the other room! Continue regular potty breaks outside, so she knows THAT is for toileting....be sure you have a treat she loves so that the minute she does her business outside, you reward that behavior immediately! I am NOT a trainer, but doing it this way has always worked well for me....and for Petes sake, if a trainer comes behind me and corrects something, go with them..... they know what they are talking about!!! |
When we gave Dinky more room, he would do great for a couple of days, then he would "backslide." So we just would restrict him to the kitchen again, usually for a couple of weeks. He seemed to understand why he lost his roaming privileges. It seems that he was not super duper trained for good until he was 8 or 9 months old. It was worth the effort. |
