Heartworm Prevention? I am picking up my first Yorkie puppy on WED :D We will be getting the female in about 3 more weeks. He is 1 lb 6 oz at 8 weeks-anyone know if this is considered small or what an estimated adult size will be? I wondered what you all give your yorkies for heartworm preventitive. The breeder told me that he has had yorkies for 32 years and never gave them any -that it has been known to be unsafe for smaller dogs and especially yorkies. I used to work at a Vet. hospital, so I know how devestating heartworms can be. I am torn on what is the right thing to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Heather |
I've been giving my 4 month old Trevor Sentinel since he was 8 weeks old, but weighed about 1-1/2 pounds. I think we gave him 1/2 a pill which was for the 2-10 pound size. He now weighs about 6 1/2 pounds and I give him 1 pill. I've never seen any ill affects to taking it. But then again, he's only had 2 pills so far. We live where there are mosquitos almost year round, so we HAVE to give heartworm prevention. Cyndie |
My vet gives Chachi heartworm medication once a month. Maybe its not needed where you live but I can't see why. The formula for figuring their weight is to toake the 12 week weight x2. |
I give Dolce Heartguard chewables once a month from the vet. She weighed 11 oz. at 8 weeks and she is now 7 mths and 5 lbs. Doubling the weight at 12 weeks is a good estimate...and remember i said ESTIMATE!! lol :D |
I give Mojo heargard, it is made for the exact weight range of your puppy...i never heard it is unsafe....what you can do is, is using heartgard blue, give half of the tablet. |
