Puppy hiding under the couch I am at work and my wife is at home with our new puppy, he is 3 months old and has been in the house for only 3 days now. He likes to go in the back room (where the door is for him to ask to go out, and his food/water is) and crawls under the couch. Today he has been under there for almost an hour now and won't come out. Should we be worried about this behavior? |
Awwww, I don't think you should be worrying - he's made his own little 'man-cave' :D He'll stay out longer and longer eventually. I know it sounds a bit mad but I think I laid on the floor more than I stood up when Harry first came home! :) Does he have a crate to go into? If not, you might like to consider getting one, and then covering it for him? Or one of those beds that looks like an igloo? It's just a security thing, and he'll grow out of it, the more he gets to know you....:) Oh, and welcome to YT from the UK! :D :wavey: Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
Toki used to do that when we first got her...I think it's a comforting, cozy, little hideout. We had a problem with her running under there when we were trying to take her out and she peed under there a couple of times. My boyfriend ended up screwing together a few pieces of wood that we slid under the couch so that Toki was unable to crawl under it. You can't even see it and it's been such a help! She now has a bunch of soft beds to snuggle in and a couple of other hiding places (ones that are more easily accessible for us!) and a cozy crate she likes to hang out in! |
We do have a crate for him but he doesnt seem to want to go in it on his own yet. We never have to force him to go in it when we go to bed or leave the house, we just lure him in with a treat and tell him good boy. He's good with going in it but does not just go lay in it on his own yet. We do have it covered so he feels more secure in it, and it's definitely not too big for him either. As for the boards thing, I might have to try that! |

My girl used to hide behind the toilet or curtains and nap there. I though it was because the house must have looked so big for her, at the time she was about 2lbs and maybe 7" tall. Now, both my girl and my boy are much more comfortable in the house, but they occasionally like the "cave" feel, so they have a few places I've done cave-like settings for them. I put beds under desks and a soft rug under my bed. Some times they go in there to nap or to keep me company when I'm working :D The point is, I think, your baby is not 100% comfortable yet. She doesn't know WHERE she belongs in your house and is looking for a place of her own where she feels safe and comfortable and which will be consistent--it will be there whenever she needs it  |
oooops I'm sorry :aimeeyork For some reason I thought I read "her" and I thought your baby was a girl :p (need new glasses, I'm sure :D) |
I bought a kitten bed like a little igloo for my pup when she was new. She would go in right to the back and curl up in a ball. It was soft and small enough that she felt safe. It Aldo had a pad in the bottom I could heat in the microwave to give her comfort like having a litter mate. I agree with Sally they like to find a wee den for themselves. |

Do you have a fan on or AC? My girl hides from anything that ruffles her fur. He may be cold. It may be he is used to a quiet dark place for security. I would try to discourage going under the couch. Eventually he is going to out grow it and it could be a problem. Maybe make him a soft bed in a cardboard box with a cover over it right near the couch. If he likes the area he may decide the box is more comfortable than the hard floor. |
How long did he stay under the couch before coming out? |
Is your pup just going under there to sleep or are they constantly afraid to come out and mingle? |
Give him his time 3 days is not a very long time in a new home. Your puppy needs time to adjust - new home, new food, new smells, new humans, etc. It can be quite an experience! Also, puppies at that age are very tired. They exhaust easily and need rest. He may not have had walks before (which I presume he has now?) Just a little extra exercise can wipe him out. As long as you're monitoring his food/water and making sure that he's still playful at times, he'll be OK. He just needs time to get used to everything new and time to rest. Best wishes, Tracey |
I would not feel comfortable with a puppy under the couch. It could chew the under part of the couch or an object it has taken under there with it. Maybe set up a place where you can observe what he is doing that he feels more comfortable with. |
