Too small to spay?
 

My 8 month old female Giada started her first heat today(3 1/2lbs):( when she was 6 months old (3lbs)I took her in to be spayed and after they started general anesthesia the doctor said her heart rate dropped so he woke her up and didn't perform the surgery. :confused: I have no intention to breed her so I want her to have the surgery for her physical health and my mental health!! She has removed her diaper repeatedly and I am finding tiny blood spots Everywhere!!!!! But after what happened the first time I am too afraid and have no idea what I should do! Please help!!

Find another Vet. If you can, get in touch with toy dog breeders in your area especially a yorkie breeder. You could try the YTCA breeders list and find out where they go for Vet care. YTCA is at Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Sometimes it takes a Vet familiar with the breed. I have had 3 1/2 lbs females spayed before and no problem. But if yours happens to have some other health issue, which you would want to find out if she does, then anasthesia may be a problem.
Correct use and type of anasthesia also can make a difference.

I would suggest you get a cardiolgy specialist to check out her heart. If her heart checks out OK, then you should get a vet that specializes in toy breeds, especially Yorkies. I can understand your fear here....if her heart rate dropped during the first try at spay, I would also be so fearful. Personally, if it was ME, I would not risk my baby's life. I have the capability to keep her isolated from the possibility of being in contact with any males, and I am thinking, if it is a "health issue" that causes concern if she remains unspayed, that is a guestimation....MAYBE she will have a health issue if not spayed....I have had 2 tiny females remain un spayed, and they are in perfect health, at 10 and 12 years old. So it is NOT a definite, foregone conclusion that she will indeed have a major health issue if she is not spayed. Second verse to this, if it is a "health issue", you already have a DEFINITE health issue...her heart rate dropped, during induction, for WHATEVER reason....THAT in itself is a health issue! As far as I am concerned, the risk is not worth the outcome! It makes no sense to me to subject that baby to a known health risk, in order to try to prevent a possible health risk!

I don't know anything about your regular vet but there are many out there with little to no experience with tiny dogs. He may not have been prepared or knowledgeable about how to use anesthesia on a tiny and caused her heart rate to drop by not using proper technique. Many doctors work by themselves or with a tech that knows little about this. They are accustomed to working on larger pets.
If you are really set on having the procedure done then please take her to a special facility and get some testing done. Find a vet that has experience in this area.

Too Small to Spay
 

I was wondering what type of anesthesia was used for the spay attempt. I have found that you MUST request something like Sevoflo it is more expensive but well worth it. The usual anesthesia most vets typically use are a different form that is not always best for a yorkie or toy breeds.

I would have a very thorough evaluation done by a vet that is well-qualified to spay a tiny dog. With the history of heart rate dropping, I would have to be assured nothing was wrong with her heart before I would consider having her spayed....to risky.

What Yorkiemom said. That said, if you decide not to spay ~ please don't ever allow her to get pregnant. She is too small and that would endanger her health as well.

I had to really think about having Lucy spayed; she was 4 lbs at the time - but she also had some health issues. Once we had those diagnosed and treated; she was given the go-ahead and I FINALLY allowed them to do it.
