New Yorkie Mom Hello Everyone, I am a new Yorkie Mom to my 12 week old, Reese! We saw him after going into a pet store to browse one night and my husband and I fell head over heels for him (he was an excellent impulse buy!!) He is our first "child" so we're learning right along with him. He is full of energy, loves to cuddle, and is all around super sweet.:animal36 I know nothing about his breeder or Reese's parents except her name is Sherry and she is from MO and we're in PA so somehow he wound up in a small pet store here. The owner of the store didn't give us much to go on. I didn't realize til after we bought Reese that pet store puppies aren't always the best bet...but we love him so no regrets! :thumbdown I've been coming to the site since we picked him up last week and it's been very helpful to read others tips and experiences since I knew nothing about Yorkies prior to owning one. My family had a Jack Russell Terrier growing up for 16 years who just passed away this past March. :lovewings We are crate training Reese and he *loves* his crate. It's in the living room and he plays in there sometimes even when it's not crate time. He has had ZERO accidents in the past week and half when crated during the day and night. He is very good about going outside in the mornings as soon as we get up, but struggles with having accidents after dinner (we usually take him out to his "potty spot" every 45 minutes after he eats dinner) and he usually winds up trying to go in the living room after we've taken him out minutes prior, haha. Hopefully, we'll get the habit broken with a little TLC. He's definitely teething right now, so anything he can bite he will! He loves his toys, but the molding around my floors seem to trump them  Nothing a little bitter apple hasn't fixed though. All in all, I am loving my little man so far. He is awesome. Can't wait to hear more about all your "kids" :animal-pa |
Congratulations on your new baby! Our first yorkie, Ginger, came from a pet store. We didn't know about puppy mills back then. She has been a wonderful dog though and we love her dearly. She is 8 (almost 9) years old now. Our other yorkie, Maggie, came from a breeder in Kansas. We purchased her directly from the breeder. She is 3 now. We also have a 2 year old maltese, Lilly, that is a bundle of love! We also have a yellow lab, Lady, that is almost 11 now. She has arthritis pretty bad and doesn't do much anymore. These little creature bring a lot of joy into our lives. Enjoy your new puppy and he will give you lots of love. |
welcome to yt and congrats on reese! |
welcome congrats on your new baby. |
Welcome to YT. Pet shops in the UK are not permitted to sell puppy's or kittens anymore. Not sure when this stopped when I was a kid this is where you went for a pet but the legislation changed as it was felt to be in humane to keep these animals in a shop. My first dog Rex came from a shop and lived till he was 10. He had no health issues his whole life and was my constant companion growing up. Hope you have lots of fun with little Reese. How did you pick the name ? |
Welcome to YT! And congrats on the new pup! :wavey: |
Hello and welcome. I'm so glad you are enjoying your new puppy. Pet store owners do not like to talk about the stock they are selling. They take those poor puppies away from their mom's way too early and ship them all over the country. Pet store owners know that what they are doing is wrong but it brings in the money. Please watch your little guy for problems as he grows. If the puppy survives being taken from it's mom too soon they can still have genetic issues that show up later on. I hope you got one of the healthy ones. If you keep reading on YT you will see the issues that are happening in the Yorkie breed because of puppy mills and backyard breeders. House breaking is a matter of your timing for now as the pup can't really stop himself from peeing right now. That means lots of trips outside for everyone! He will get the idea after a while. Do you take him right back inside and give him a treat as soon as he does his business? That will help him to keep in mind why you are taking him out there. Sometimes they think they are out there to play. Hope things continue to go well with you and the little guy. |
Thank you!! We picked Reese because our favorite candy is a Reese Peanut Butter cup and with his brown and black coloring, we thought it was fitting. :) |
congradulations on your new puppy, however, puppies from pet stores are often not from reputable breeders, and can have many health realted issues as they grow, so watch out for that. If you have not taken him to the vet yet, that would be the first thing to do. Make sure your little guy is healthy , and does not have any unforseen health problems, maybe even get a complete blood panel done on him and start him on his vaccines too. Little puppies tend to urinate in the same spot , so since he has found one place he likes to pee in your home I would place a puppy pad in that area, just until he gets fully trained to do his buisness outside. Sine he is young, limit his outside time, until he is fully vacinated. |
Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself. We are getting a Yorkie puppy in a few weeks, so looks like we'll be travelling this fun road at the same time! Luckily, you're a few weeks ahead of me, so I can ask you all the questions. :) Lindy |
Congrats! Seems like you're off to a good start. |
