Partially Eaten Bully Sticks? What do you do with the bully sticks your dog is still working on? He takes forever to finish one so they just get all yucky and mushy. They also smell once he gets going on it. He doesn't ever just walk away from it either. I have to take it away after so long just to give him a rest. Lately, I've been putting them in a tupperware but I'm afraid it will get gross with the moisture. Thoughts? |
i cut the mussy part off and buy the oderless. i just keep it on the counter in a baggie.... but when it gets 1/4 way in size i toss it and give them a new one. |
You want them to dry out after they are done chewing them. They harden back up. Don't put them in an air tight container as that is going to keep it gooey. When I gave Gracie her first bully stick she chewed for hours on it! The next one she chewed quite a bit but not as much. I think she just was so chew deprived before I got them that she went kind of crazy with it. Now she might chew for a few minutes once or twice a day. She seems to get more interested in it when she is excited about something. When someone comes to visit or when she has just come in from a walk she seems to want to chew. The bully sticks are icky but they have really solved the issue of her stealing things to chew on. They make her happy so I am happy. |
I stick Macy's in the freezer for a couple of days. Somewhere I read where the freezer will kill all the bacteria and germs on a bully stick that has been partially chewed. |

I too cut off the mushy part. I keep them in a cookie tin on the counter...not air-tight, so they harden back up. Then when they get about 3 inches long, I discard them. |
Thank you for this great idea! Quote:

Joey's bullysticks dry out pretty fast in AZ and the type I buy only the tip ever gets moist, never the whole thing. I microwave about an inch of water for 30 seconds and put the bullystick in the boiling water and nuke for another 30 seconds. This softens the tip and kills any wayward germs, and Joey makes me do this! He throws the bullystick at me until I do it! He's turning into a little bully! |
I would let the bully stick defrost before giving it back to your dog though. I think a frozen one would be too hard for the teeth. It would be a nice treat on a warm day if was mostly defrosted. |
I have a small (separate) Frig for the Doggy Food/Treats. I keep the BSticks in it until handed out (2 at a time). My guys usually can chew on them for a couple days, but, I pick them up when they get short. I "suspect" that they swallow them when they get short enough. I don't like that idea of having them deal with that issue, until they are digested, which they would be eventually. Yea, they can get sorta gooey on the ends, but I have never noticed any growths or visual problems which I thought were serious enough to pick them up before the "length" limit was met. My biggest problem is keeping an eye on them, and not letting them get too short. |
