switching dogs food schedule? ok so im getting my new yorkie puppy in a few weeks. my other dog, a maltipoo, has access to her food all day. we leave out a bowl and just keep filling up when she finsihes that amount. we had done this becasue when she was a puppy she wouldnt eat when we would put it down for her, and she was too small to not have her eating at all! so anyway now that we are getting the new puppy ive been doing research and stuff and found out its better to do scheduled feedings, especially becasue it makes housebreaking easier. so with the new puppy i want to start this. however, i dont want her to eat the dogs food, so i want to switch to scheduled feeding for the dog as well. how might i go about doing this? thanks so much for any help |
Figure out how much food your doggie will need each day and divide it into the the number of meals you want to feed. At meal time, leave the food dish out for 15 minutes and take it back up after the 15 minutes whether she eats everything or not. Eventually she'll learn to eat at the designated times since her food won't be available all the time. Post pictures of your pup when you get her! |
You might want to get an idea from the bag of food just how much your dog is supposed to eat on a daily basis. With hold food overnight and try feeding her in the morning when you feed the puppy. A young puppy usually eats three to four times a day and I'm sure your adult dog will be interested in the puppy's food. You may have to separate them while they are eating. Free feeding can lead to obesity so try to feed your adult dog only what is right for your dog's age and weight. Your going to be keeping yourself busy supervising dinnertime! |
I free fed my dogs all their lives until the oldest one became diabetic and we needed to regulate her food so we changed all the dogs to mealtimes. We split the daily amount into two meals and feed morning and evening. At first they left a lot because they thought they could get it later but soon fell into the pattern of regular meals. |
