Chloe and the pond We are in the process of putting a pond in our backyard and Chloe is obssessed with it lol. She keeps walking around and around on the flagstone and were pretty sure that shes going to take a very sudden swim. So my DH is now designing steps to ensure that she can get back out easily. She is trying to eat the plant life  so it looks like some research is in order. Its so darned cute watching her with her wet little face explore this new area in her backyard. |
I love ponds, but they do scare me. Be very careful. We had one girl on YT lose her little yorkie in a little pond. |
Thats why we are taking steps to ensure she can get out if need be thats why my husband is now working on creating steps that will allow her to walk out on all sides of the pond. Also the pond is quite small only 4X3 and not terribly deep. We both were saying that we will have to watch her outside now and I cant imagine how horrible it would be to lose a little one like that. Thankfully Chloe only likes to be outside when with one of us and our backyard is nice and small. I appreciate the words of caution, always better to know the worst that could happen so as to ensure it never happens. I Love Chloe so much that just the thought of losing her is unbearable. |
Awww, sounds cute, I bet she loves it. :D |
Oh, I agree. Please be careful. My son lost 3 German Shepard pups in their pond. Scary as heck. You could see where the mom had tried to get them out and it was soooo sad. |

It's a matter of being careful which will allow her to explore safely, I always have been a "little" overprotective of her lol. |
I teach all my dogs to swim, but they must be able to climb out of the water. So you have to teach them where the steps are. |
Jackson is a water fool and any body of water he's in it usually. He's obsessed with the pond. It's not even a foot deep tho so he goes and lays in it and it's absolutely disgusting. My dad is planning on fixing it up this year but now the water is nasty. |

She must think you got her a pool of her very own! |
One problem with steps being made from stones or rock is that in a pond they get very slimy & slippery so it's best to use flat slate to make bigger/wider steps so the pup can walk easily out of the water. Also, Do check out the poison plant list for those plants as there are toxic pond plants. |

LOL, I was actually really surprised to see her interest in the pond. She never was much of a water dog. I wanted to thank everyone for their advice too :) Thats one of the things I LOVE about YT, our members take the time to offer advice and point out something that I may not have thought of. We are using flagstone which is a nice flat rock to provide steps in the event she goes into the pond but as the pond creates a possible safety issue I am just going to go out with her when shes in the backyard. In my opinion it's always better to err on the side of caution and Chloe is my little baby I would do anything to keep her healthy and safe. With a little effort she gets to have something fun to check out as I love her having new experiences, having fun and the opportunity to discover and explore :) |
We have a koi pond and our chachi has fallen in and gotten out. I dont let them in the backyard by themselves but I have even had cats fall in and they were able to get out |
