I was wondering if it could have been a bee sting. The fact that there is no swelling kind of indicates it is not a bite. If a little dog did get bit by a poisonous snake I doubt it would even live long enough to make it to the vet. Garden snakes rarely bite and when they do the most you would have to deal with is a topical infection. A bee sting could cause some issues especially if your dog has an allergic reaction but I would think that there would be some swelling at the site. Do you have rose bushes or something with sharp edges in the yard? Maybe he managed to eat a bug or plant that made him sick. It's all just speculation at this point. Did the vet give him something for the vomiting? Has the vomiting totally stopped? We have garden snakes around here. We live down in a wooded area. I only let Gracie play in the part of the yard that is kept mowed short and I keep her out of the garden and the edge of the woods. I'm sure she would love to play with a snake. I hope your baby is feeling better real soon. |
If they survive the snake bite, the next issue is secondary infection at the site of the bite, so antibiotics are good! Yes....the vet went to the house...but it took him all day to get there and he kept coming up with excuses not to come...was "going to be at least 3 hours before he could get there"....."going to be after the clinic closes"...."charge much more for house calls"...."additional charges for after hours"...."additional fee because they could NOT get the dog out from under the truck so the vet had to crawl up under the truck to care for the dog"....with each excuse, my brother just kept saying, MY dog NEEDS you, come on".....my brother loves his animals and would have floated a loan for that bill if he had to....but I lost a lot of respect for that vet..... |

Happy to say that Cooper is starting to seem better today. The mark looked between the shape of a horseshoe and a round mark. The vet we saw gave him an anti nausea shot and antibiotics, but he still started seeming a little worse as the night progresses...wasn't throwing up..just didn't feel good. I ended up giving him a temperil p that I had here. This is the second emergency that I have used this medicine for in the past two weeks. I asked the ER vet I was speaking with if he thought it might help any inflammation and reduce his body's reaction to whatever it was. He checked to make sure no interactions with his other meds, and He seemed to think if it didn't help, it wouldn't hurt. This did seem to help, and he is seeming better as the day goes on. |

If your dog is bitten by a snake, there may be no cause for concern, as the majority of snakes are nonpoisonous. The bites of harmless snakes show teeth marks in the shape of a horseshoe, but there are no fang marks. Dog Snake Bites |

I don't know for sure, but I do know that now I am even more uneasy about bringing my babies outside! |

Wow... What a scare!:eek:I am so sorry! I am glad he is feeling better today. I would print out that information and give to the vet... He should have known that! |
Yes, I do fell like he should have. I obviously wasn't convinced with his answer which is when I got on here to ask if anyone else knew. This vet clinic has been ours for years, but this particular vet is brand new...we had not seen him before. I had a pretty large mishap a few weeks ago with my babies getting their vaccines...and I had already decided to look for another regular vet. It's just that when this happened, it felt like an emergency, and I just went to where I could get him in asap. |
